      Blackhat SEO = faster, riskier

Whitehat SEO = slow, boring, riddled with myths & fear of the frightening black hats.

        blackhat = all backlinking

whitehat = being the second coming of shakespeare and having such amazing, unique content on your site that people naturally link back to you. Great if you want to wait about a year for anything to happen

HAHAHAHAHA! That was the perfect definition of whitehat.

well blackhat can essentially get you banned, because they involve doing things that google "frowns" upon. you generally wont get banned unless you do something really obvious or stupid. but i generally stay away from blackhat

Whitehat is all google approved methods but are pretty slow for gaining rankings..

Google doesn't approve any method other than just having a site and putting content on it.

Any link building, pinging, RSS feeds, submissions, tools, gimmicks, tricks, is 'frowned upon' by google. If google had it's way there would be no such thing as SEO or link building.

But that's not the way it is, and that's not the way it will ever be. As long as google is sending traffic, there will be people optimizing for search engines.

Google pretends to be the king of white hats, but google has the blackest hat of them all.

I tend not to worry about whether something is 'black hat' or 'white hat' or anywhere in between. I go with what works, and what I feel comfortable doing.

I don't consider sending thousands of unrequested emails to strangers whos addresses you scraped off the internet to be something that's acceptable for my business.

I do consider sending thousands of generic spun comments to blogs that have left their comments on autoapprove to be acceptable, though perhaps not very effective depending on what the purpose of all the commenting is for.

To me, black hat and white hat are essentially the same thing: SEO. Some of it works, this is the stuff I continue to do, some of it doesn't, this is the stuff I stop doing. It's as simple as that for me.

        Black hat
        • Mass links from unrelated sites
        • Using software to build links
        • Hacking sites to get your link on them
        Grey
        • Profile links
        • Directory submissions
        • Buying links
        White
        • People just linking to you because your site is awesome (good luck getting links to that niche site about stainless steel four slot toasters)

For Google, any type of SEO is some sort of manipulation of the search engines. The border between what is still white and what is black is often fluent and very fuzzy.

(Not talking about extreme BH stuff like cloaking, ads-clicking scripts etc...where its obvious its BH, maybe even almost criminal)

Black Hat SEO: choosing the unsocial way to increase the traffic at your site, the big G really get hurts by this, even it can ban your site too.

White Hat SEO: the organic and noble way to exists in the cyber world. the big G loves this style

i've been on both sides so I guess I can chip in a little bit.

Having bought most "Whitehat" tools out there (eg. article submission software, directory submission) to "Greyhat" software (eg. senuke, rank builder etc) to "Blackhat" tools (Xrumer, Scrapebox)... these things have lasted well for me but not for this year..

Basically blackhat is a way of manipulating Google by creating a lot of spam blog comments, and a hell lot of "profile links" in general (a lot of forums allow you to insert your URL when you create a new forum account).. That worked, and still works, but I'm seeing a huge drop in terms of effectiveness employing strategies like that..

But most of these links will not be indexed, and 99% of them have PR0.

White hat is where you go out, write genuine good content, have people come reading it and actually learned something out of it, they will eventually share it, it becomes viral and ultimately people starts linking back to you automatically because they want their readers and friends to feel good after reading it, and there you go - Traffic & Backlinks.
