Is it considered duplicate content if I take an article that I post to my site and then post the article to an article directory like ezinearticle? Should the article be spun to keep it from being duplicate content?

you can do it. But you should wait at least few days, depends how often crawls you site and index that page your article is on. But the author must be same.

I am sure Alexa will be here soon. Until she arrives, let me summarize what I believe to be best practices for article directory submission:

    1. Write or have written for you an informative article. Do your own research. Do not use PLR for this.
    2. Publish the article on your own website.
    3. Verify the article published on your site is indexed by Google.
    4. Without changing the article, submit to article directories.

With the new Google algorithm, it will be considered as duplicate content if you submit an article that has already been posted in your site. However, you can still do it by spinning your article.
