How important is the age for a domain ? I know older domains tend to be more trusted, but how important is this ? Is it better say, to buy a 7 year domain that is just gibberish, or to get one that is related to what you are doing ? I am asking strictly from the search engine point of view, not the visitors.

i'll buy a new domain related to my niche and build on it with time. age significance on SEO is negligible.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve to be honest. A brandable domain doesn't really have to include anything relevant to your niche. Think Amazon, ebay, Google, Yahoo, twitter, wikipedia, craiglist.. etc.. The list is endless! All of those major players are examples of branding.

I believe it is better in the long run to build a brand and if you can pick up a good brandable domain with age then it is a good thing (usual caveats with buying aged domains of course)..

Of course EMD's or keyword rich domains do have some SEO value as well but generally are quite limiting in terms of the scope of what you can do with the site. Add to this, it is probably one of those SEO tricks that will one day be less effective. In my opinion it is far better to concentrate on solid SEO and branding than SEO tricks.

Based strictly on my experience with aging domains I can tell you that domain age is very important.
I had one domain that I had blasted with multiple black hat applications, but I believe it was the domains age that let most of the blasted links and profiles slide without getting slapped or de-indexed.

I associated age with Google trust and Google relevancy. That is as long as there is content going up regularly.

I wouldn't buy an empty 7 year old domain though. I don't think it would be worth too much. Just because it has zero content on it.

I think that domain age has value from SEO point of view. It is some what similar to old wine. Domain age reflects the trust as well.

Buying or having an aged domain is recommended but the quality of the content in the site matters most.
