    I don't believe there is any word count threshold. Google said they don't want duplicate or redundant content. When you look at web pages, the duplicate and redundant content is usually in your header, sidebars and footers, as it repeats across all your pages.

    With that in mind, the answer to your question is: you need enough editorial content to make up for all the duplication in your header, sidebar and footer. I would say, the ratio of editorial content to the rest should be at least 1:1 or greater.

    That said, it's still possible to rank pages with very little if any content, unique or not.

      Googles algorithm isn't as great at picking up duplicate content as people think, its the human workforce that catches duplicate content. There are too many things online that HAVE to be duplicated and are not penalized. Music lyrics, poetry, books, quotes etc.

      I think Google scares you more than it can actually bite you. (as far as the algorithm goes) Thats why experiences are so different, because its a dice game of landing on a human computer screen or slipping through the cracks and only dealing with an machine.

    Well I too don't pay much attention to the word count. It is more about how you put all the things together. Quality content should be our preference rather than the quantity content.
