Project White Hat - Adsense Diary

Hi guys. After being inspired by some of the threads in this forum I've decided to make a serious effort with Adsense. I've just finished reading the latest SEO guide released by Google which basically focuses on onsite optimization and reminds us how they would like for us to play by their rules.

So I've been thinking to myself and wondering if it's even possible to build a site that gets good traffic and makes a good income from Adsense without using any gray hat SEO. By gray hat I mean anchored links. Anchored links used with the purpose of improving your search engine rankings are gray hat no matter where you get them from.

I really fancy a challenge to help keep my interest so I'll be working on a blog in a strictly whiter than white fashion, no anchored links. The only links that I will be getting will be from a handful of website/blog directories. These links will use the name of my blog as the anchor text as recommended in Google's SEO guide. The following are the major points from Google's SEO guide that I'll be using.

  • Use the Google Keyword Tool for keyword research
  • Focus on writing good/high quality content
  • Directory submissions as recommended.
I have got a little head start with the domain that I'll be using as it has been indexed for around ten months already. It currently has 13 articles of which 11 are indexed. The blog has also received an average of 22 visitors per day through the month of December via the search engines.

So now for a strategy. I remember reading a thread on this forum a few months ago where the guy who wrote the thread was making some okay money pretty quickly by going after keywords with 300 competing pages using quotes. If I remember correctly he was getting some links as well though, can't remember his name, apologies to you if you read this. This is my plan in brief.

  • Very general site topic (Home & Garden)
  • Minimum monthly traffic of 100 for each keyword
  • Maximum of 300 competing pages for each keyword
  • Focus on writing content

I decided on the theme Home and Gardens for the site as there are hundreds of subtopics for me to go hunting in. I created a list of 1265 topics which are related to the theme of my site. I call these topics my "Root Keywords". I'll be going through these root keywords one at a time to find low competition phrases using Google's keyword tool.

When using the "exact match" option on the keyword tool Google tells you approximately how many searches per month each phrase receives in their search engine. I decided to only target keywords which receive a minimum of 100 searches per month.

I'll be using this thread as a diary to help keep me motivated along the way. Please don't ask me for my site's name or url as I'll just ignore the request.
