Newbie: Backlinks

I bought a list of edu back links. I need to know if I should ping them now and how long will they take to index on my site?

    .edu doesn't really hold any extra weight, just fyi. Also, I never really saw the point in pinging backlinks. It looks more natural if you just let Google discover them. Depending on the number of links, it can take up to or over a year for Google to index all of your backlinks and give you their full benefit.

      There are lots of opinions of whether or not to ping backlinks. Many SEO services offer it as part of their service, if you outsource backlinking to them.

      There's another thread on the subject here: http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...backlinks.html. It also has links to some good pinging services if you do decide to ping your links.

    Pinging can speed things up but really they will be naturally crawled and indexed in due time. SEO is not an overnight game, it takes time for links to get indexed.

    I am using the free version of Content Notifier and use 10% of system resources for backlinks and pinging.

    yeah, its amazing how long google takes to find backlinks when Yahoo seems to find most in a matter of days. I wonder if Google uses the time difference between backlinks as part of its formula to make sure the sites are going to continue being important or something.

      My experience is that in many cases, Google is not a good source for determining backlinks at all due to the inaccuracies in reporting. Google can show just a few backlinks for a particular site, while Yahoo Site Explorer will show 300. I am pretty sure though, that it has to do with Google's algorithm which includes link age, if the link was ever indexed by Google, and many other factors..

        If I were you, I'd be pinging about 50% of your edu links and let the other be found naturally. Best of both worlds and usually works for me.

    I suggest not to ping the backlinks , this is what I tell my clients. Let Google find them naturally. If after 2 weeks 0 links are indexed proceed to ping some of them and see what happens. Remember, SEO is a PROCESS and takes time. You cannot buy 1 set of links and expect to have higher rankings. Link velocity (consistency of link building and speed) and link diversity ( types of links...mixed etc.) are some of the most important factors when talking about link building. Of course quality of backlink is also importnat..PR etc.
