Enough with crappy press release websites !

The purpose of this topic is to tel you my astonishment...
I'm a French SEO, and I just started an English SEO mission. But US SEO is very different than FR SEO. Of course tell me if I'm wrong in my assumptions.
We (French SEO) have a lot of free different free platforms: directory, social bookmarking, press release...
I was naturaly looking for the same stuff on US market, but it doesn't work the same way ! Most of the PR sites are paid ones. I am particularly looking for PR sites because intext links get much more quality.
I could find (on this forum for instance) a few "SEO friendly" PR sites lists, but most of them are not allowing intext optimized links ! How can this be "SEO friendly" ?!
I made a list of really SEO friendly sites, but I couldn't get much...
What I am most surprised about is that a lot of people are submitting articles that contains up to 400/500 words... with no link in it ! Writing such long articles is not an easy task, and what is the result for that ?! So I am wondering: do you guys give more attention to quality or quantity ?
Finally, I'd like to know: who is looking for good free press release websites that allows optimized intext links (dofollow of course !) ? I can't be the only one...
