Introduction

Keyword Research is the most import key to online success, it doesn't matter if you are using Pay Per Click or Search Engine Optimization, without the proper knowledge of picking the right keywords, you can't build a successful online business.

How To Pick The Correct Keywords for Your Business?

I think the first thing most people doing keyword research is trying to find the highest search volume keyword. That's why they are destined to fail when building almost any kind of businesses online!

There are 3 very important factors to consider when picking a keyword:

  1. Keyword Competition
  2. Search Traffic
  3. Type of Keyword

From the first 2 factors, we can have 4 scenarios:

1. Low Competition High Traffic - You can easily rank your keyword with the least effort while getting the most traffic! This is your candidate.

2. High Compeition High Traffic - This kind of keywords usually receives an extremely high amount of searches every month, but they are very hard to rank, many are dominated by the authority sites with big budget, you want to avoid this kind of keywords.

3. Low Competition Low Traffic - Newbie might ignore this type of keywords completely, but there are many high conversion keywords here, this is your candidate.

4. High Competition Low Traffic - Just ignore it, doesn't really worth the effort to rank.

Do you see the trend in the above 4 scenarios? It doesn't matter the volume of traffic you are going to receive, we are focusing on low competition! When I say low competition, this is a relative term, it all depends if you can rank that keyword easily.

I will talk more about ranking the keywords in the later part, now let's looks at what kind of keyword tools are available?

1. Google Keyword Tool - This is the mother of all keyword research tools. We usually start getting some ideas with this keyword tool.

2. Amazon Advanced Search - Amazon is the largest online store, usually you'll find a lot of books for your topic. If you can't find the book for the topic you are going to build your business on, re-think again, that's a big risk there.

3. Ebay Shop Search - You'll find a lot of related products for your keyword, use this to expand or brainstorm more keywords.

You can use these 3 free search tools to generate and expand on a lot of keywords, let's dig deep into how to check your keyword competition.

Keyword Competition 101

There are 2 ways to check your keyword competition, one is typed in quote search in Google. Another way is comparing the top 10 websites with various ranking factors.

Let's look at the first way, most SEO marketer calls this "SEO Competition". For example, if you want to learn about this keyword competition - "how to get my ex back", here's what you enter into Google:

"how to get my ex back" - Google Search

There are about 12 millions of competitionpages, this is the indicator where we use to get an idea of the keyword's competition. The quote search will give us a rough idea of how many websites are included in Google's index for this keyword, but it doesn't really tell us the direct competition of this keyword.

Every search marketer that is targeting that keyword will put them in the web page title. This is one of the major ranking factors. That's why we need to know how many websites with web pages that optimize for this keyword. We can enter this command into Google: allintitle:how to get my ex back

allintitle:how to get my ex back - Google Search

That's a 74K result, meaning there are 74K web pages with a title that contain the keyword.

Please note that these 2 indicators don't really give you the accurate competition level, in the next step, we are going to look into the top 10 ranking comparison. This is the most accurate and direct indicator. You'll get an idea of how many backlinks you need to rank on top 10 position.

In the top 10 analysis, backlinks count and backlink quality are the most important factors, following with the site's Pagerank and domain age.

When we talk about automated tool for keyword research, I think Market Samurai is the only proper one. This software helps us to extract keyword's information, top 10 competition and track keywords' ranking. This is a must have tool for every SEO marketer. I can't imagine working without it.

You can then use those keywords to target on your webpages and get higher rankings for them.

This way you can also test different messages and use that as a SEO description
