Does the age of a domain affect your rankings? I have read people saying that domain age increases your ranking. Is this just myth or is it real? I mean without external SEO like backlinks, will a domain rise to the top with age?

It is one of the factors which you can over come with right link velocity. In other words showing Google that your website is gaining popularity rapidly and it is worth to rank it.

Yes, domain age can be a factor in how well a site ranks - an older domain without a good history is "trusted" more.

There are many factors involved with old domains..

    1. age of domain : anything above 5 yrs is good..

2, relevancy of domain: is the domain relevant to ur niche? was the old site built on this was around the same topic??

    3. No. of backlinks: and their sources...1000 spammy backlinks wont make much good..many times sellers spam their backlinks before 1- 2 months and get thousands of backlinks..you should check the age of those backlinks..if they are old and permanent...you are good..also if they are from relevant good sources,,then best..
    4. also check if domain have any penalty by google..check site:domain.com..if its showing in google then it means domain is still indexed..

its very rare case that you will find a domain with all such specifications..but anything near them is very good.

Most important thing related to old domain is trust rank associated with the domain..with old domain, you can go agressive with your link building campaigns.and you can see results quickly.Thats why they are so in demand.

Sometimes it is. But just make sure that you check out the domain history because it might have been banned or de-indexed in the past by Google or other search engines. Trust me, you don't want to get screwed over that way.

Domain age is also one of the important factor in Google Search Rank. I read once the number of the remaining days (days to expire) is also has an effect in search rank but not so sure.

I mean without external SEO like backlinks, will a domain rise to the top with age?
Without backlinks it is very difficult to get a nice position in Google for competitive niche.

      Newsflash: Domain age means nothing.

There's a thread about SEO secrets. The SEO secrets are that
the SEO underworld is full of mythical beasts.

Most of these myths have to do with domain resellers sucker punching
      unsuspecting dolts.

    Domain age doesn't mean much.

    BUT

Domains with OLD backlinks do mean something. That means Google and the search engines see a long preexisting history. That DOES mean something and there's nothing better than having links that have stuck for 10+ years.

So - old domain with ZERO backlinks = same as new domain
Old domain with OLD backlinks = great head start and worth using

Domain age is important depending solely on the keyword you are going after. When it comes to low competition, your domain age doesn't matter a whole helluva lot.

But... if your going after more competitive keywords it starts to play a big factor--mainly a Trust factor with Google. If you've been around awhile and have history with the Algo, Google will treat you differently.

On-page optimization is still more important, but domain age does play a role when you get to more competitive stuff.

If that domain has lots of quality backlink, why not?
but if that domain has no backlinks, probably it is a junk.

All the replies seem to be about backlinks. Exactly. Nothing at
all to do with domain age.

Domain age by itself has no bearing on SEO. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Nil.

There have been some rumors that domain age itself matters. But the pro domain age weren't able to show evidence or results or whatsoever thing that would support their argument.

Therefore, I think domain age itself has nothing to do with the ranking. I completely agree with Paul.

Domain age is a factor you need to consider but not that important on its own, domain age, SEO, backlinks, etc.

Domain Name has totally nothing to do with rankings. However, a well established domain with good backlinks is a different story.

Domain name? Domain age is the main topic here in this thread, and I think that domain age still matters in improving your site's rankings. In the latest Google algorithm, they improve the criteria for old domains.

It sure helps, but not critical. I'm ranking #5 in google for a certain phrase with 232,000,000 results with a single blog post that's 2 months old, the next "youngest" site on page one is 4 years old. There's even a 12 year old site that's 2 positions under me.

Remember, having an older site does not magically increase your knowledge of SEO, hehe

Domain age is an important factor, yes. It is of even greater importance when thinking about a link building plan. If you have a domain that is only 2 weeks old you would not want to build 5000 links in the matter of 2 days. The key is slow and steady for a new domain.

Two months ago, I bought 18 high PR backlinks, the owner claimed that all of their domain age has been nearly 6-year-old and my website link would be placed on the homepage forever. The problem is after two months, I haven't seen any positive result in keyword ranking.

i have successfully ranked tons of websites in 1,2,3 positions using home page backlinks..the best case so far is 4 month old site, with 20 page content,is ranking 2 nd for 640k allintittle,11 million exact competition keyword with high cpc. hpbls does not replace you backlinking ..its one of the most important part of your bl stratrgy.however, you must knoiw what you are doing.18 good homepage links can work well if you are not in competitive niche.the most important part being..how authoritative those 18 sites are..
