Can profile links be considered as good way to get back links? Expert opinion required.

I wouldn't use profile links on a site less than 6 months old with less than 1,000 already indexed links, reason being profile links usually comes in blasts of 2000-7000 which will make your site dance like crazy in the serps, there better off to be used to link to your tier 1 links, example issue a paid press release then build profile links to the press release housed on a high pr domain. Profile links have also been de-valued post panda, it's more about unique content now, and more against link farms which profile links are.

As John said, they can be dangerous to new sites with few backlinks.

You should aim for a mix of profile links, blog comment links, article links, homepage links, and any other type of link you can get.

Profile links still work maybe not in the same sense as before but I use them to index links and they do a great job . I use all the HIGH pr domains to the main site and then build more links to them however what John said is correct. It depends on how old your site age is but the best thing you can do is have good link velocity. one example Build 10 high pr profile links everyday for 10 days and see your rankings go up.

I'd go with John on this one, Panda has changed the way sites are ranking quite dramatically. My personal approach is to firstly create unique, quality content for the user, do good onpage SEO and go for a natural approach for getting traffic using:
    • Blog commenting - Manual (semi-automatic posting, and actually reading the blog owners posts
    • Social networking (I'm finding I'm getting a lot of traffic from social networks)
    • Article creation and submission, make sure your content is unique and good quality, forget spinning and submitting unreadable rubbish
    • Finding authority sites/forums in my niche where I can actually add some value and benefit from not only a backlink but from building relationships
At the end of the day make sure that you protect your money site and if you are going to any mass link building...keep it consistent, don't get hundreds of links created and just leave it at that, keep the momentum going.

Since the Panda update, my sites have started to rank well, my sales have increased and I'm loving it!

It will be excellent to see the end of the worthless spam that really doesn't provide any value to the user.
