Hi! I'm wondering if "Exact Match" is more realistic then "Broad Match" in the Google AdWords Keyword Tool?

Thanks,

Jimmy

Yes, definitely be using exact match. If you're using broad then a keyword that let's say is getting 4k broad searches may only be getting less than 1k exact searches.

I've built a lot of micro sites before figuring out that I was supposed to be using exact match back in the day, needless to say, those sites didn't get very much traffic

You build micro niche with static html, you need to use exact search.
If you have autoblog or a blog with manual update focus to long tail keyword, you can base on board search. For sure exact search is realistic than board search. The extra traffic is bonus.

There is nothing "more realistic" about exact match compared to broad match. They are telling you two different things.

Exact match is how many searches are performed with those exact keywords in that exact order.

Broad match is how many searches are performed containing those words in any order with any combination of other words.

For example, if your keyword phrase was "blue widgets", the following searches...

      blue widgets
      widgets of blue
      widgets that are blue
      buy blue widgets
where the hell did all these blue widgets come from
buy widgets that are not blue
I like blue beer with my widgets

...would all contribute to the number of broad search totals.

Adding more to what Mike said above, this is how I would structure the internal links to rank an internal page/keyword "Blue Widgets".

The green box is the exact search keyword, the orange boxes are the broad/longtail keyword phrases.

Build most (not all) of my external backlinks pointing at the green box (Blue Widgets) page, since that's the keyword/page with higher traffic that I want to rank in the SERPs.

Repeat for the next keyword I want to rank...

Just a rough example, I would tweak those keyword phrases/page-titles/URLs.

Yukon - Would you link all of that within the content, or do something like a "Related Pages" after the article? My internal linking strategy (if you want to call it that) sucks, and this little diagram was really helpful.

      Thanks!

If you are talking about worth fulness of the exact vs broad matches; i believe exact search gives more relevant potential in compare to braod

Broad match is demonized and talked down about a lot but I find it extremely valuable to find related terms

and it is also great to find terms for LSI style of article writing

google does not like when you optimize your page for only one kw
if you do not have related kws in the page text, google tends to view your page suspiciously

That flowchart is useful for SILO'ing the site
I would think those kws might come up with broad match ........but they seem to be only the ones with the kw in the term...........which actually for this is good

the numbers are not important for broad match
just the kws themselves are what you are after
