Ranking Locally with Global Domains

Dear fellow Warriors

For the past couple of months I've been discussing the possibility to provide SEO for offline clients. Now, I have a business plan laid out and I don't need tips in that area, but I have encountered one significant problem.

The thing is, domains with my country's extension are incredibly overpriced and difficult to come by. Since the first rule of business is to protect your investment, I want to be the one who controls the link juice to a customer's website.

So, without making this a wall of text, the question is:

Can global domains be as significant as local ones in terms of backlink juice they give to a local domain? Are there any special steps that need to be taken to achieve the same ranking power? For example, setting it as a local website in Webmaster Tools?

    Last year I was working on a brand new domain in my country. Domain had .com extension. I used Webmaster Tools and set it up to target users in my country. Also, backlinks from 'global' domains seemed to work just fine because I've achieved high rankings and my website survived through every Panda update so far. You can PM me for more info if you want.

    Anyway, I don't know much about this so is there anyone else who could share a bit more info on this topic?

    It's just as easy to for example rank a .com as let's say a .co.uk in Google UK, contrary to popular belief. However you will need to a) ensure your website is hosted in the country you wish to rank on and b) that you set your geo-targeting to the target audience via webmaster tools.

    The answer is yes. My website's are all local and I build backlinks only to global domain and I have no problem.

    John what is the competition of those keywords? Are you ranking for google.ro?
