SEO question about analyzing competition links

Hi,

I have been trying to analyze competition for a couple keyword phrases, and noticed that the current competition has LOTS of inbound links, but VERY few of these links are actually the keyword phrase I want to target.

If all on-page optimization was equal, would I be able to beat them for this keyword just by getting more inbound links with the appropriate anchor text for this keyword? Or would I probably have to come close to having their overall number of links as well?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi LizzardQ,

Not all links are valued the same, hence number of links isn't all that meaningful. How relevant they are, how many outbound links on the linking page and how much authority they have are all part of the equation.

A single link from an authority site could be worth 10,000 backlinks from free-for-all sites. Focus on the quality of the links rather than the quantity.

        Let's add to the equation.

First off, there are MANY factors that rank a page, more so than what dburk kindly explains.

I'd like to direct you to wikipedia and study their content.

What makes them an authority website, other than having a LOT of pages?

In one phrase " A lot of semantically theme related document structures appearing".

Now, take a close look at their pages, not only are there pages have great content with a LOT of related keywords, but these keywords are ALSO linked up to another document/page, which also has a LOT of information on, and so on... a never ending structure of related documents..

follow suit, and you wont go wrong.

          Hi,

Thanks so much for your responses! Definitely useful information that I'll keep in mind, but let me rephrase the question a little differently...

I guess what I was really asking was how important is the anchor link text in getting you ranked for a certain term.

For example...If you have a bunch of really high-quality links and are an authority site, but have NO links with an anchor text for a certain term, could a competitor outrank you (just for that term) just by using the appropriate anchor text in their links? Or does the fact that you ARE an authority site with good quality links outweigh the fact that you don't have the appropriate anchor text for that term?

          Hope that makes sense!
