If you've been led to believe it is a "waste of time" to post a comment on a blog/website that is No Follow, then you have been misled. These links, while not as useful as a Do Follow link, are far from useless - assuming the site you are posting them on is worth posting a comment to, whether its Do Follow or not.

How do you think it looks to G if you have nothing but Do Follow links to your website? Certainly not natural, and natural is the name of the game these days.

At any rate, to answer your question, you can use the free Firefox extension called NoDoFollow to see which links are Do Follow, and which are ones not.

It is not working with Firefox 4.

Google the nodofollow 1.5 for the latest version.

by the way nofollow links are red and dofollow links are blue when using this add-on.

Right simple answer and easy but.
Dofollow link is crawled by the search engine spider and count as a high quality backlink rather than nofollow link is not counted as a back link because is not indexed by search engine spider.

Couldnt agree more spyder its an Im myth that no follow means no use, you want your backlinks to look as natural as possible and like you said it would be totally unnatural to have no no follow links

Simply the answer is that in no follow you will not get PR juice of the site but in Do follow you will get the same up to some proportion as well as traffic and SERPS. No follow and do follow are required for any site you are doing blog commenting and any seo techniques . You can use the Firefox extension to check about do follow or no follow in any blog or site.

Thanks

I use the search status and the alex add-on. They are both killer!

If you are having trouble using the add-ons, make sure your add-on toolbar is on. You can use this short cut "Ctrl+/". Hope that helps. Love both of these add-ons btw guys

Well, "easy" way is to check the source code of the webpage (If there is already a link there). Then you can see in the link itself if it has a nofollow attribute attached.

It isn't for me: I make money from them.

When I can leave value-adding comments on relevant blogs, I get targeted traffic from them, without even having to do the targeting myself. And that means opt-ins and sales.

The time-consuming part of "blog-commenting", for me, is identifying blogs relevant enough to my niche for their traffic and backlinks to be worth anything to me. Once I've found one, I'm certainly not going to fail to make a relevant, value-adding comment on it, if I can, just because its backlinks are allegedly "nofollow".

I have the Firefox one-click toy to differentiate between them (the version 6.0 one seems to have installed itself in my Firefox now: it wasn't available when I first downloaded version 6.0) but I don't even check them - simply not relevant to me.

Many search engines seem to ignore "NoDoFollow" anyway.

Many people believe that Google doesn't discount "nofollow" as much as it sometimes claims: it's ambiguous at best.

There are many threads here explaining/discussing do-follow/no-follow links, if you're open to having a little re-think about them: this one might start you off, and then there's more here, here, here, here, here, and so on.

First off, there is no such thing as "DoFollow", there is only the absence of "NoFollow". Sure, you can put 'rel="DoFollow"' in your link code. You could also put 'rel="CousinHerman"' in the code, and it would mean just as much.

Second, there are server level ways of implementing NoFollow that no browser plugin will find, so relying on that is iffy at best.

Last, go back and read Alexa's post again. Read some of the threads she's provided links for.

Blog commenting isn't just about links. It's about humans. Most of the humans I know aren't going to be impressed with a comment on a travel blog by "GetABigger Wang" with a one-line 'good post' comment and a link to a boner pill affiliate page.

My nofollow links bring more traffic to my website than my dofollow!

To find dofollow links you can use software that highlights them. I use SEO for firefox myself it highlights them red I think. You could also go to the specific webpage right click and go to view page source, all you have to do then is perform a search. Type in "nofollow" to the search box and if its found its a nofollow blog/forum.

Go after both dofollow and nofollow. As the rest have already told you there is value in both.

While I completely agree with the comments above saying you should not dismiss nofollow links, if you still want to find 'dofollow' links another way to find them is to search for comment management plugins that remove the nofollow attribute.

So for example you could search for people using the nofollow free plugin by Googling

  intitle:keyword phrase "nofollow free"

where the keyword phrase is relevant to your niche.

SEO Quake can also indicate whether a link is nofollow or not.

  Thanks

If you guys mentioned "no dofollow" is not so important, well, I have to agree with you guys. You have made your point there, it's not about "dofollow" or "no dofollow" or what so ever, the most important thing is the real traffic from the real human beings. But the thing is when we do blog commenting on relevant blogs, how we are going to impress them so that they will visit our blog without forcing them too??

Don't try to force them to go to your blog. Don't comment with the sole intent of drawing visitors.

Do write something worth reading. Do join the conversation.

It's not all that much different than contributing to forum threads. Add value.

Okay, now that I've got the general stuff out there, here's a specific...

Don't try to link to your home page, unless it's the most relevant page to your comment. Link to a post relevant to the conversation.

Let's say you have a cooking blog, and I'm commenting on a post about secret recipes for pasta sauce (every Mama has one).

I might comment that, if I'm making Bolognese (tomato and meat sauce), I can change the sauce by varying the mixture of the meat used in the sauce, and provide a link to a post on blending meats for pasta sauce.

Of course, that page has a very prominent opt-in box, and a CTA drawing attention to it before and after the post...

The side benefit is that other bloggers may very well decide to respond to you on their blogs, linking to your post as they do so. These organic links are the very best kind, drawing both link juice and visitors, while also building your brand and authority.

Granted, doing things this way is more work than just dumping 'nice post' on a bunch of blogs you picked because they used or didn't use a 'nofollow' tag. But when the stars align and everything works, the results can be sick.

I use SearchStatus for Firefox. It will highlight the NoFollow links and has lots of other cool feature, such as showing the robots.txt of the site, etc.

It also provides a nice PR and Alexa ranking icon in your status bar. It's great for quickly checking PR of sites, especially now that Google stopped supporting Google Toolbar for Firefox 4 and above.

That said, NoFollow shouldn't prevent you from commenting at all.

I actually agree you 101% but I had always a small confusion in this part of relevancy... Well you have a blog on how to get best result in SEO (and also you are doing business by giving services in SEO) and I've a site that has same theme, now when I put a link to my site in your blog to attract YOUR visitors to my site, why will you allow me to do so?

Hi, I have a question, how to know if a website has "Do-Follow" or not? For me this is important if you want to do blog commenting. It will be a waste of time if you leave a comment for a blog/website that does not have "Do-Follow", any ideas? Thanks

Highlight a backlink (keyword/url) then right click you mouse, then select inspect element or view source. if you see this "rel="nofollow" then it is no follow.. if you are familiar with it, you can easily judge a site if it is nofollow, NOBODY'S COMMENTING. lol..

Use SEOquake and set it to put a line through nofollow.

That said, nofollow links are far from useless. They have several benefits, including passing "link juice" to several search engines other than Google, diversifying your link portfolio, and maybe even passing some juice via Google.

Seomoz indicates that there's a higher correlation for rankings with nofollow links than dofollow, even. Not that correlation=causation, but it's something to look into. The most likely scenario IMO is that large, authority sites don't focus as much on "SEO" and therefore acquire more nofollow links which increases the correlation.

But who knows?

Using any browser plugin or viewing source code will only work if the page in question puts the meta information in the header or individual links.

If the no-follow is implemented at the server level, you'll never be able to tell the rule is there.

How is it done?

One way would be to write a rule in the robots.txt file disallowing any link to a domain other than the site's own domain.

Originally created as a way to manage the flow of link juice in one's own site, NoFollow became a way to discourage spammers looking only for link juice. Many experts believe that whether a link is NoFollow or not has little to no effect on its power to influence rankings.

Some even suggest that focusing only on "DoFollow" links (since people insist on using this erroneous term) may be more harmful to small sites than large ones, as large, authoritative sites will tend to attract more NoFollow links naturally.

  Thanks

I've read conflicting articles and whether to dofollow or nofollow external links on your website. One argument is use of dofollow dilute your link juice that goes to your other pages on your own site. However I believe I read an article by Matt Cutts many months ago where he recommended using dofollow.

An example is a link to the Better Business Bureau BBB. You know it is already indexed in Google, so why send any link juice to them. But you want customers to see you are a member and be able to click the link to verify you.

Or another example may be a link to a the official brand site so customers can get more information about a product or get warranty service. Dofollow or nofollow?

Thanks

If you aren't affiliated with the site you're linking to, use nofollow; otherwise, use dofollow. Always use dofollow for internal links though.

Ok. To clear up a few things:

1. Nofollow links are not ignored. There are several benefits to them (this is from the perspective of the site getting the backlink). Having a mixture of nofollow and dofollow backlinks pointing to your site make your link profile look more natural. Plus, not every search engine's crawlers use the nofollow attribute at all.

2. You do NOT need to use dofollow on every internal link. Pages such as your privacy policy or others that you have no interest in ranking should be issued a nofollow tag.

So if I have a page advertising a certain brand of products that I'm a dealer of, linking to the official site for that brand with dofollow will help MY SERP for that brand keyword? That is what I thought, but I also though it diluted the passing of pagerank through links to my own internal pages?

Start by taking off your "gotta keep all the juice for my site" hat for a moment...

What Matt Cutts is really telling you is very simple. If you believe a site is "worthy" of your vote of confidence then leave it as a follow link. If it is an affiliate link, or other site you do not want to promote, then "no follow" tag it.

Here is the way you should think about this. What is going to improve the overall value of the internet for you and your readers? Do that. In your example of the Better Business Bureau, I would leave it as a follow link. They are relevant, authoritative, and valuable to my readers. If it was an affiliate link to Clickbank or Amazon I would no-follow it, since the actual page does not provide overall value.

You can bet in the long run by following the advice in my last paragraph you are going to increase your relevance to Google and avoid more of their algorithm tweaks than trying to focus on always eking out one more tiny ounce of link juice.

You can put as many "rel=dofollow" tags as you want, anywhere you want. It doesn't mean anything, because there is no such thing as a "dofollow link."

"Follow" is the default value, it does not have to be declared. In the absence of a "rel=nofollow" tag, spiders will follow links. There is some evidence that other search engines, and even Google at times, will follow the link anyway.

With that being the case, Barry's advice above makes the most sense. Only use the nofollow tag, and then only on links you do not wish to endorse to the spiders.

  Thanks

After all, if a page is not worth indexing, why not tell the bots?

If you do enough searching then you'll notice that it's heavily debated. My personal opinion? I obviously prefer "dofollow," but I'm not going to turn down a nofollow link. At the very least it's going to help your diversity. And other engines don't seem to be as clear on their stance.

A hyperlink can have two tags: nofollow or dofollow. NoFollow tells the search engines to not continue to the website or give it credit for a link. Reversely, DoFollow tags give your website credit for the link. All of the links we obtain are DoFollow

DoFollow is simply an internet slang term given to web pages or sites that are not utilizing "NoFollow." NoFollow is a hyperlink value that tells search engines not to pass on any credibility or influence to an outbound link. Originally created to help the blogging community reduce the number of inserted links into a "comment" area of a blog page, the attribute is typically standard in blog comments. It helps overwhelmed webmasters disallow spammers from gaining any kind of advantage by inserting an unwanted link on a popular page.

Google came up with nofollow to combat spammed links
  in unmoderated ways, like comments.

Recently, they have even told adsense users to
not put adsense next to spammed comments.

Now, what constitutes a spammed comment?
A link? Gibberish? I don't know, so I will not
put adsense on pages that allow comments.

Oh wait! I stopped allowing comments ages ago...
they were all spam. Including a zillion that had no
  links...

The point is, if one thought logically, what does
"nofollow" actually mean? SPAM or untrusted
  link.

So, one has to wonder what google thinks of
a site that has nofollow links. Are they
acknowledging that they are allowing spam?
That the links on their site are not to be trusted?

Big, huge, authoritative blogs and sites, like yahoo,
fully use nofollow with no problem. Joe Blow's
  site cannot be that lucky.

Ask yourself, what is the point of a nofollow link?

  Why was it invented?

Google does not ignore the nollow links. They have
nothing to do with actually not following them, so the
name is a misnomer. They have nothing to do with
  being indexed either.

So why would one go after nofollow links, or even put
  them on their site?

Let's see, google spies your link in a nofollow. Does
this mean someone thought your link was spam?
  Untrusted?

There is no reason to get a nofollow link, unless it
helps you get boatloads of targeted traffic from people
  clicking on the link.

Nofollow was invented for one reason and one reason
  only. SPAM.

  Paul

For people doing SEO, "do follow" and "no follow" are of course not unfamiliar. Dofollow and nofollow are the link attributes attached to a link on any website to assist the search engine about its quality. Webmasters use this service heavily to tell search engines whether the link posted on their website is a reliable one or not. It helps the search engine to determine if the website wishes to link their page to the mentioned link, so that the visitors could have more information about their desired topic.

A nofollow tag has the following format (HTML code) rel="nofollow">text link</a>. The nofollow tag indicates to Google (and other) spiders to not follow the link to its intended place. Thus, making such links value-less from an SEO point of view. The only intended audience for these links are human visitors who cannot tell the difference between a followed link and a nofollowed link (because the code is hidden in the back-end).

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no friggin attribute "dofollow." Before passing oneself
off as an expert, get a grip on reality.

Of course, many, many people think there is a dofollow because
some people overuse the term. Quite meaningless, actually,
there is no dofollow and you can't force google to do anything,
nofollow or no nofollow. I detest the term dofollow. Complete
bogus term.

And as stated, nofollow has nothing to do about indexing or
following the link.

Yup! Nofollow links don't hurt, but logically speaking...

Here's another caveat. Boy I'm on a roll with this one.
Little known.....webmasters have been trying to avoid
any penalties for paid links or link trading by putting
the nofollow with them, not realizing that's not what
it's for. So again, google sees a nofollow link either
on your page or attached to your url...is that a tip off
it's a paid link?

I never put any nofollow on any of the links I sell.

Paul

Who spreads this garbage non-sense? Can you link us to whoeve provided this report?

Its no wonder people are so confused when they are starting out with SEO.
You've got a million people all telling people different "facts", which aren't
even close to facts!

This has got to stop.
No-follow links will NOT hurt your rankings.
Think about it this way for a minute.

IF Google allowed Nofollow links to hurt your rankings don't you
think you'd see a bunch of services promoting negative SEO?
Essentially services that simply SPAM your competitors out of
existance....Imagine what a wild west type of SEO that would be.

Obviously those services don't exist. BUT if NoFollow links could
hurt rankings than you could bet there would be.

Ok,

Here's my 10 cents on it.

I have been trialling (across 300 sites) over time link building from nofollow link building.

Google are pretty clear that they do not index pages or pass pagerank to pages if they are no follow.

You can see this here - rel="nofollow" - Webmaster Tools Help

There are other search engines that will index, but I know I don't care about the other ones as this is where all the traffic comes from for my clients sites.

I have found if I am using nofollow with an attempt to rank clients site for a specific keyword that I have zero success. This is why it's important to source keyword related backlinks with the attribute isn't "no-follow" or "External no-follow".

But this isn't a lock off to the total argument.

What I also noticed is google are still using backlinks from social sites and high cred sites in order to determine the authority of a given site, which is the reason that social media is playing a bigger role in SEO.

So although no-follow will not directly assist in ranking for a keyword (especially since Google will not directly acknowledge that link), it will still assist with the overall SEO process as long as you are using a variety of link building techniques.

I would love to hear others thoughts on this.

Thanks

Having nofollow links on your website won’t harm your SEO as such, but it will affect the flow of link juice through your website, not limited to the pages for which you have nofollow links pointed.

SEOs used nofollow links to prevent Google from indexing pages that they deemed irrelevant for SEO, such as terms and conditions pages, disclaimer pages, contact pages etc – by excluding these pages from being followed by Google they were able to ‘sculpt’ their PageRank, ensuring that more important pages were treated as such by Google.

Google’s recent change to the way it treats nofollow links means that adding the nofollow attribute to a link no longer tells Google to ignore and apportion the link juice equally to other pages linked from the same page; it instead drops the link juice to the page that has been linked with a nofollow link.

The way to get round this is to structure your website better, rather than relying on being able to just nofollow links to pages which you do not want indexed.

So, in short, having nofollow links on your site doesn’t hurt it as such, but you’re not helping your other pages to garner more link juice in the way they used to before Google made its change.

If you will find free ones thay probably will be spammed already.
If you will to pay for a list of do follow links, you can get good quality, but also few people know about it.

Best method: do the research by yourself
- try to use special Google operators like: "allintext:leave a comment" or any other related to placing a comment term but keep "allintext:"
- check PR of the blog page WARNING: not PR of domain, but PR of a specific page that you wish to comment on (you can use SEOQuake addon for Chrome)
- check page if comments that already exists have do-follow atribute (SEOQuake will tell you, or check the source html, if after "a href"" " is "rel="nofollow" - I think this is selfexplanatory what it does
- even if you will find pages with NO-follow atributes but high PR you can still comment on them, on way or another it will help your rankings (not directly by sending link juice, which is not send to you, same as anchor text, but will help keep divercity of link sources

Cheers

Cheers

Kris

That's pretty much all there is to it. There's a few free tools floating around, I believe. But the best thing to do is do the research yourself. Though I'd add that Scrapebox is incredibly helpful here because it can automate most of the work on a massive scale.

Will a link with the nofollow attribute give you any boost in backlink benefit power/juice for your search engine rankings with Google?
Code:

<a href="signin.php" rel="nofollow">sign in</a>
Not according to Google. Beats me why anyone is still debating this point

Google Webmaster Tools Help

Are you spreading links around just to get a search engine benefit? Save your money and time. The auto-blog-commenters just add to the spam deluge on Auto-Approve blogs. And because serious quality blogs are mostly manual Admin Approval, why do it?

The good news is... commenting manually on Non-Auto-Approve high quality blogs with a quality comment can get you a lot of value...

Will a link with the nofollow attribute bring your website some traffic?

Surely it can. The I-want-to-know-more-human-click kinda traffic. Careful placement for blog comments can bring you lots of genuine buyer traffic too if you use a good overal strategy

Targeted Traffic interested in the topic on the blog post and interested in your post

Secret Sauce Tip for Quality Traffic from NoFollow Blog Comments

High quality blogs gets quality traffic. Visitors who most likely interested readers who love to read quality comments. Most high quality blogs with manual comment approval do not allow Links inside the comment.

UserName Links - However they will allow a nofollow attribute link in the user name, but trying to use "diet secrets" as a user name won't get you approved too often.

But most manual approved comments will allow your real Username to include your noFollow link
Code:

<a href="http://www.MyLovelySite.com/diet-secrets" rel="nofollow">Sam McReady</a>
Truth is, those user name links rarely get clicked. No traffic without a click.

But what is almost always allowed is a citation in the comment

citation - this is just your website domain name without it being a link. example: domain.com

"...so after all that, eventually I lost 312 lbs using a simple fruit diet plan with my regular exercise program using only a deskchair. I wrote it all out in a PDF and anyone is welcome to download a complimentary copy at MyLovelySite.com"

So how does a No-Link at all NoFollow comment get you any Targetd Traffic?

Even the village idiot seems to know that copy-pasting MyLovelySite.com into Google will get him there by showing your website at the First Place seach results for MyLovelySite.com. And the high percentage of comment readers who will google your are very targeted high-value visitors for you.

Try this method and... go look in your site analytics after awhile... it will show you visits from Referring Domains where you don't have backlinks. No link to click on but there are on your website because they googled the citation

The same thing works even better in forum posts. Stay on target with relevant comments and posts and the high quality traffic will come. And these domain citations are about as permanent as you can get.

Regards,
Jan Gregory

EDIT: I see that this Thread was split between backlinking concerns and with webmasters"Does having noFollow links on my own website hurt SEO?"

Using the noFollow attribute within links on your own website will not effect your search engine rankings one bit. Nada effect on your site, except with your internal linkages... its for guiding the SE robots through your site pages. The original intention was to allow webmasters to stop the bots going to privacy, contact and other non-content pages.

Google expanded the value in the organic algorithms to remove all link juice from external links. Its a freebie for them to combat link spam. That's why they did this.

Well I think you have got the answer now how to display the nofollow and the dofollow links. If you have not then I can give you two options...

  1) Nodofollow Addon for firefox
Here Nofollow links are red and dofollow links are blue, when the addon is activated by right clicking and selecting the nodofollow option.

  2) Seo for Firefox
Here Nofollow links are crossed with a line in between the text and dofollow links are kept as they appear in normal way. To activate this addon just click on the SQ maked spot on top of browser near the search box of the browser.

And speaking about no follow and dofollow links they are both the same almost, only nofollow links are not crawled by the Google spider, but they do give you traffic. So building of nofollow and dofollow both are equally important to your website. And I also have read an article where Matt Cutts say that- "A link is a link no matter it is dofollow or nofollow."

Yes, no link value if you get any link from no-follow attributes. You can check simply from view-source of that page, just find no-follow. Besides you can install Add-ons 'search status' and activate 'Highlights no-follow links' but this add-ons only work in Firefox.

Do-follow blogs or do-follow backlinks are very important as google gives weightage, which helps to improve the ranking. No-follow links are not consider by google. No-follow links are not harmful to your site. In other search engine point of view these type of links are same value as do-follow.

Debate over Do- follow and No-follow is never ending but what we should understand is the balance we need to maintain in our website while doing link building. Do follow help to get a good back links on a website but more of it will make search engine suspicious about your SEO practices. Thus no follow is also essential as it keep our link building strategies balanced and helps to get good ranking over the long run.

Don't avoid no follow links completely. Both do follow and no follow links are important in the search engine optimization. Not sure if anyone said this already-dont want to look through every single post-but SEO Moz does a great job of showing do follow and no follow. However, you should also know that no follow links are still valuable. For example, take a no follow link you found from seo moz and see if it shows up in webmaster tools. (it will show up) so next time you think no follow doesnt mean anything-it has some relevance.
- Thanks

To determine do follow links is quite simple. All you need to know is to scan through the source code of the page you are trying to check ( right click on the page and then go to 'page source') Alternatively, you can also find the source code on the 'view' menu. If you find 'nofollow' then, it's obvious that page is programmed to be have 'no follow' links.
- Thanks
{{ DiscussionBoard.errors[7341212].message }}
aaronbenny 14 years ago

Its very simple. Go to the source page and find "nofollow". If it is present then that link is nofollow. But don't completely avoid nofollow links. They are very useful in generating traffic to your website.

First of all , I want tell you one thing that if you doing blog commenting in " do follow" then it will be really very tough. That you have to check manually as well. For that you should use firefox and add "add on" , for that you can easily judge the particular blogs or website weather it is do follow or no follow.
I even found one thing that you can search " Do follow blog" in Google search like Do follow blogs search Engine. I didn't try yet, but I think you should try it as well.

I'm very skeptical of anything saying that nofollow links can't have an impact on your search engine status. In my opinion if Google Webmaster tools and SEOmoz give you the ability to track both there's probably more to it.

Nofollow links don't pass pagerank (and that about it) - it doesn't mean that they are not good links to have or that they are completely invisible to Google.

I would definitely do with a mixture of both, especially if the site is an authority in your niche and you are looking to establish thematic relevance.

Aside from Google, Yahoo & Bing don't respect the nofollow attribute, AFAIK, so while they may not account for much traffic, they should not be completely ignored. And if the links have the potential to generate direct traffic, then that is important as well.

IMO, There's reason at all not to include nofollow links in your backlink portfolio.

At the very least they'll give you some diversity.

Don't forget though, relevant backlinks can generate a fair amount of traffic themselves. Especially blog comments. Nothing massive, but enough to make it worth the time to comment.

Never doubt the power of a nofollow link. The search engines rules and ways of determining if you are relevant or not change all the time. So if it is not too time consuming creating the diversity does not sound so bad in the grand scheme of things.

Some people rank for the moment and some rank forever. I like to keep an eye on the long term more than the short term.

While I agree with the general sentiment on this thread that no follow links are not something you should avoid just because they're no follow. Developing your online presence on relevant, quality blogs and other sites can be a great part of marketing. Actually, it's really one of the more enjoyable parts of the whole process...getting to know other like-minded individuals.

That being said, SEOmoz provides a great page ranking tool that has a neat feature you can just turn off and on at will. It will highlight all do follow or no follow links on every page as you go. It saves a lot of time and you know right away what to expect on that site. It may be part of the Pro version only, though.

There is a free tool that will help you do this very, very easily. It is called SEO for Firefox. Go here to download it now: SEO for Firefox Extension: Free SEO Toolbar Firefox Browser Plugin (Note: be sure to have Mozilla Firefox installed first)

Then, once it is installed on your Firefox browser, right click on the SEO icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen, and select "Highlight NoFollow Links". Now, when you want to leave your anchor text backlink on a web page, you will be able to check if the backlink that you leave will be DoFollow or NoFollow (highlighted in Red).

NoFollow is not always a bad thing, sites like Yahoo Answers and YouTube give back nofollow links that have no affect on your rankings, but you can still greatly benefit from them. I agree with most here, use Firefox with SEO extension nofollow add on.

This is the best idea to get backlinks from other highly rated pages.Even all the backlink generator or seller pages you found over the internet follow this technique to sell backlinks. But the main thing is that you have to find out whether the blog you are commenting is do-follow or not since backlinks from commenting are possible if only the blog allows do-follow.And for this you have the do little tricks.those are easy but need some effort too.

Officially Matt Cutts says that no follow do not count in passing on page rank and link juice so no it would not help. Now, is this true? probably so but I believe that having no follow as well is a natural part so to look more natural it would help with some no follow as well.

I don't agree at all.

Just an example, what happens if your site goes "viral" and starts generating thousands of backlinks a day? Plenty of those are going to be nofollow. Google is not going to penalize you just because you've got nofollow links.

There is so much misinformation. Even google is pretty vague about what they do with them.

How does Google handle nofollowed links?

In general, we don't follow them. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links. Essentially, using nofollow causes us to drop the target links from our overall graph of the web. However, the target pages may still appear in our index if other sites link to them without using nofollow, or if the URLs are submitted to Google in a Sitemap. Also, it's important to note that other search engines may handle nofollow in slightly different ways.

In General??

Also a no-follow link on a page can be indexed or picked up by other sites, and in turn picked up by google. Take wikipedia for example (As mentioned previously), I have links that although no follow have then been picked up by othersites in their content which don't have the no-follow attribute on the link.

Either way, too much weight can be put on this and devalue your whole link building strategy. Perhaps google doesn't transfer pagerank or anchor text across these links and it is clear that google is aware that these links are there, but I doubt they are going to disclose how they use this information.

I have written Three Posts on my Blog about dofollow and no follow. There is some great tools that you can get for free to help you find do follow blogs.

All links are good though some carry a lot more weight with the search engines.

One other thing that you can look for is called Commentluv. This gives you a direct link to your last blog post on the site that you are commenting on.

I personaly have both the do follow and comment love on my blog. But then I believe that we should all be helping each other to succeed.

I hope this helps.

You will need to copy and paste, as I don't have enough posts yet to put in the links. lol

Well, they're still links. But I see your point. There's always a heavy debate on if "nofollow" backlinks actually do much of anything. I've stopped worrying about it and will take most any backlink I can get. Nofollow or dofollow. Obviously I'd much prefer dofollow links, but I won't turn others down.

Some nofollow links can still generate some traffic themselves. So they're not entirely useless.

This is so bad that you got all no-follow links and it is also true that no-follow links doesn't pass any link juice to other website. There are some websites that have good authority in Google and parsing no-follow links, but linking onto those websites may produce good traffic. Experts say that you should have the ratio of 3:7 link, i.e. 3 no-follow links and 7 do-follow links. If you got all do-follow links, Search Engine will consider it spam, might be you won't get what you want.

Thanks

As per me nofollow has link power. Now you think in what way. Then nofollow links be helpful for driving traffic to your site though it can not pass on link juice for your site. But indireclty when you get traffic for your site, then with the particular link you get content also and if that content is from high pr and authorised then it definitely be helpful for your site ranking due to unique content for your visitor and this indirect way you can get better result of your site.

Obviously there are tools like Scrapebox, which can be seen as less than white hat. (If they're used to mass comment.) But leaving quality comments on moderated blogs is not even close to spamming. You can use SEO quake or if you are using Mozilla Firefox you could download one of its addon which is helpful in not just telling you follow or no-follow but also in many other things. The name of the add-on is Search Status.

If you examine the page's source code (right click on most browsers) you should be able to see if existing links already have a rel=follow or rel=no follow thing. Sometimes you cannot see this if the site or blog is using complex javascript. But at any rate, just post your links, its never a total waste of time.

1- Do follow links are extremely important as they pass trust and authority to your site.

2- No follow links are equally important as they tell search engines about the genuiness and popularity of your site.

There are many plug ins available in Firefox with the help of which you can check dofollow and nofollow links.

But, at the end of the day Google won't count them (no follows) for rankings so I wouldn't put much effort into no follows.

Thanks

I'm not sure if I'd say they're equally important since they carry almost no weight. But if you're getting them from authority sites they can drive a pretty good amount of traffic themselves.

Gotta disagree here. I'd much rather have a tool instantly show the status of a link as opposed to having to dig through the source code.

Regardless if it's no-follow or not.... It's always good to mix them up as it helps to add link diversity to your backlink profile.

Before, those no-follow backlinks could actually bring up direct traffic... Especially if you make a QUALITY comment on a QUALITY Blog.

Just add the " nodofollow " addons for firefox. This will help to differentiate which is nofollow and dofollow. Otherwise right click the link --> properties. A pop-up window will show you the details of the links.

Dofollow blogs is important to get backlinks. Generally bloggers love to comment on dofollow blogs. They want to improve their sites backlinks by commenting on dofollow blogs.
But first you have to know the difinition of dofollow & nofollow.
Dofollow Blog:
A dofollow blog allows search engine spiders to crawl the site and follow the link. If you comment on a dofollow blog, a backlink will be created so search engine spiders will crawl your link back to your site & it brings SEO benefits for your site.

Nofollow Blog:
Nofollow blog is complete opposite of Dofollow blog. It doesn't allow search engine spiders to crawl site and follow the link. If you comment on a nofollow blog, search engine spiders will not crawl your link and will not follow your link back to your site & it brings no benefit on SEO for your site. So it is useless to comment on nofollow blogs.
If you build your site with wordpress you can easily make your site dofollow. You need to install a plugin - sem-dofollow.

This works OK. But you'll be excluding blogs that may still have comments as DoFollow, just other links as nofollow. All it takes is one instance of "nofollow" to exclude the URL.

No-follow are a MUST in any link bulding campaign. Personally I don't really care about follow or nofollow links just like I don't give a **** about keyword density, my general rule of thumb is look natural and you'll be good to go. Natural backlinks profile is probably the most important factor to look at if you want to avoid getting penalized in a few months by a Google update...

Another lighter plugin than SEOQuake for Chrome lovers out there is, 'iSEO' - This also highlights and helps you check nofollow links instantly as well as OBL per page.

But from an SEO point-of-view, I think nofollow links are very valuable and they matter just as much as dofollow links do because it makes our campaign looks natural.

There are two ways to check if a link is "NoFollow" that I know of and if there is more I am sure people will let me know.
Check the page source
On the page, you want to check:
Right click to view the page source
Find the HTML link to the website that is being linked to
By default, all links are DoFollow unless the NoFollow attribute appears in the link.

Of course, for your blog problem there need to be some blog post comments already there first to see this!

A link that is Do Follow counts as a back link and as such give authority to the site that is linked to. This helps it place higher in the search engine results pages. A link that will pass link juice and that is good for your search engine rankings if it points your way. It’s just easier to call it a “dofollow link” in Seo.

Nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target's ranking in the search engine's index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of search engine spam, thereby improving the quality of search engine results and preventing spamdexingfrom from occurring in the first place

I don't think it's a waste of time having to right click and look at the page source to see if the links you create have the nofollow attribute or not. It depends one where the person is comfortable. Well, there are plug-ins, but if you're a lot more comfortable with the right click and all that, then do so.

About these kinds of links, would it really matter if they're nofollow or dofollow if your main purpose in creating those links is to share something that's relevant?

Use software SEOQuake to see whether the link is nofollow or dofollow. If a link is nofollow then it have a line over the keyword. I want to clear one more thing. Normally people think that nofollow links are of no use but this is only partially true. Yes they don't give backlinks to your site and don't able to tell google's crawler but they are a reason for giving you traffic as well as sometimes they are more beneficial then dofollow links if they are found in high PR sites.

nofollow is a html attribute to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not pass page rank. "follow" describes that a link does not have the nofollow attribute.

I would strongly advise against any form of comment spam or forum spam, as they can actually have a very negative effect on your rankings. However, it's great to leave real comments on blog posts that you read, as long as they contribute to that blog post. Also, being active in a few forums within your niche can be very rewarding, and a good opportunity to link back to your site.

As it has already been stated, hundreds of times; 'Do Follow' provides an instruction for PR/link-juice to be passed on through the link, whereas 'No Follow' tells it not to do this.

Both links are valuable in the correct context, but do follow's will usually be much more sought-after because of the PR influence. However, no follow's on blog posts or some sites where you're putting useful articles or comments can help traffic flow to the website. If you've done this thousands of times, that's potentially a 1000 extra visitors - to some this might be nothing, to others it might be 100% more than they're currently getting.

Just make sure not to spam and actually provide useful, constructive posts and content.

Thanks

It's interesting to get a Truck Load of Information regarding "Do-Follow" and "No-Follow" Links!

In Light of Post-"Google Penguin", for Blog Commenting, ensure to comment only on blogs that are identical to your targeted niche, or sharing the same niche as your own blog/website. That way, your links, whether "Do-Follow" or "No-Follow" will be identified as RELEVANT when the Google Spider comes crawling along.

Furthermore, Readers will also benefit from clicking the link to your website, with added incentive of getting to know another blog with relevant niche. =)

Cheers!

Use Firefox browser. There are several ways to check links for "do-follow". Some plugins are not working with each version of firefox but i am going to tell you a tip.

Use Firebug plugin for checking the links. Though firebug is not developed for check links

but this was developed for checking the web page codes and fixing the errors.
Load the page which you can check for "DoFollow" in Firefox and open the Firebug panel by pressing F12 key. Select the "Inspect element" options and just click on the link. This will show you the source code for link. If link source contain "rel="nofollow" its not need to tell you that its no-follow but if there is no "rel=nofollow" then be sure its a "DoFollow".

Is it not helpful ?

Thanks

Do-Follow is not working with Firefox 4. But there's a firefox extension called the SearchStatus. But the Google the nodofollow 1.5 is the latest version. You can pay for do follow links to assure good quality cause you can find free ones but they're probably spammed.

Best of Luck.

Right clicking your mouse on a certain blog or website will allow you to view the "page source" option. Click page source and then ctrl+f to find if there is "nofollow". If you can't find a "nofollow" then it is a "dofollow" site. I find this time consuming so I just go to the search box and see if anyone can provide me a list "dofollow" sites.

i have read all the threads and then analyze that here you all gives a mixture of advices, some are saying about how to detect the no follow and do follow and some are discussing about their importance.
so guys to check that do follow or no follow you may take the help of source code and the benefit of both are that-
relevant no follow links-traffic and site authority
irrelevant no follow links-complete spamming
relevant do follow link-amazing and superb
irrelevant do follow link-provides link juice but now site authority and traffic
i hope u all get the right game of no follow and do follow.....so both are still important concentrate on relevancy and quality of commenting will be more beneficial

After penguin update, do not worry too much about d follow, no follow, anchor text, no anchor text etc...

All these over optimization which has nothing to do with content or improving visitor experience led to freq algo changes from Google.

Ateleast now wake up guys, pay little attention to the do follow , no follow debate and create good content and build quality links with a natural link profile.

yeh i also think dofollow is very important for blog commenting task for SEO.Because without dofollow site it is not possible to do link buliding by blog commenting so do follow is must but it is the question that how i will know which is dofollow and which is not.i actually use a firefox add-on "nodofollow" which you get by clicking the tools bar and then click add on bar then search on "nodofollow" and install it on your firefox browser.

It is a common question of many peoples How to check Do-Follow Link?

Don't believe everything you read. Dofollow links are still good. Just because Google has a patent doesn't mean that they have implemented it. I know sites that rank number 1 or 2 in their niche for pretty competitive terms like graphic design city-name where 90% of their links are from non-follow blog comments on pages with strong PageRank. By strong I mean PR3 or better.

I'd swap one PR4 nofollow link for 1000 PR0 dofollow links any day of the week.

You can use the seoquake plugin for firefox and search the site. change the settings in seoquake to include dofollow links. you'll see that no follow links are struck out when displayed on the web page.

SEOquake | Guide

But, just like you said. "nofollow" is a waste for Google SEO purposes. However, if the blog and the topics discussed are relevant, you still might get a trickle of traffic from your blog entry. Just because people are interested in hearing more of what you have to say.

You Can use "No DoFollow" Plugin for firefox or using SEO QUAKE for firefox, if you using NoDofollow you can activate it and you can see if blog is dofollow or nofollow with the color of link, if the link is red, it meant that the comment or links are nofollow, another if you see blue it meant dofollow. If You using SEO Quake you can visit the page what have some comment, click Ext on right side under address field to show outbound link you can see where is dofollow and where is nofollow. Hi Sasake! Before posting any comment, read the guidelines first. Some guidelines tell you if they're using a do-follow/no-follow link. If it's a no-follow, you can make it short but still sensible. Some research advised that it's better to balance do-follow and no-follow strategies. So having no-follow is healthy as long as you don't overdo it.

To find dofollow links you can use software that highlights them. I use SEO for firefox myself it highlights them red I think. You could also go to the specific webpage right click and go to view page source, all you have to do then is perform a search. Type in "nofollow" to the search box and if its found its a nofollow blog/forum

I can agree with most commentors about "nofollow" backlinks not being completely useless.

Commenting "nofollow" blogs with relevant niche to your website can in fact increase traffic especially those blogs with comment luv plug-ins. This plug-ins enables the latest post from your site to appear below your comment thus allowing exposure to audience with relevant interest and niche.

You can also give Ardor Backlinks and Auto Backlink Service at try. These sites have been offering "nofollow" backlinks as well as .edu and .gov backlinks.

It is misconception that no-follow do not add value to a website's link profile. Do follow link will only concerned to add PR value to a page. Doing comment posting you should care more about the relevancy of the topic and you niche and less on the no-follow and do follow.
By the way to check link attribute on any site you can install SearchStatus firefox plugins in your mozilla browser. Right click on the icon of plugin and select Higlight Nofollow Link.

Rankings where great, i got 3000 unique visitors per day from the tech niche (tecboy.com.br), but then panda came and now the site doenst bring serious money any more. But i have another. 70% of the links are nofollow, in 1 month the site as gone from noting to 2000 unique visitors a day in the finance niche. Of course it has great do follow backlinks, not only no follow social links, or else you couldnt expect great traffic.

What he said

Google considers nofollow/dofollow ratio when determined what is web spam or over optimized. Mix both, use nofollow to create anchor diversity. Use your anchors for dofollow (up to 30% ish) since this are the ones that matter for rankings (directly).

Hello.
Its very easy to find out whether blogger provide "Do-follow" links for comments or not. By seeing other's comments you can find out. If no other commented on that blog, you can just try once to know that.

And its not waste of time if the blogger provide only no-follow comments. You can get a backlink from that blog but you can't have the link juice from that blog. Got it?

No-follow comments are also acceptable by the webmaster and they consider that as a back link. And, having both no-follow and do-follow comments is better that having only do-follow comments coz of it looks to be natural when having both kinds of links.

Thanks

Yes, you can check if the links are "do follow" or not... for example you can download browser plugins for showing "no follow" links...

I have a Chrome nofollow pluging that shows all such links marked with pink...

Highlight the link, right click then view source
If you see no-follow anywhere then it is no-follow if you don't then it is do-follow.

Along with finding the no follow links, finding sites with a 0-1 page rank scarcely compare to the benefits of higher ranked pages. In order to find those pages, using second hand software works well to help find such sites. There are several freeware versions out there, like SEO Quake, that not only help you find these higher ranked pages but, also provide much more insight into the quality of the page.

Hi,

Its actually true that there is no use of using "Do Follow" links, as it is not considered as backlinks. You can view the source code and find, if there is tag used like "no follow". Also search status in Mozilla add-ons and many other tools available to find out whether the link is "no follow" or "do follow"

I have reasons to believe that Google measures traffic through all links, this includes "no follow"... so it's the mere fact that there's a link that's important.

Otherwise, the "no follow" doesn't contribute to PR, but who knows to what else it contributes? Like: SERPS!

Nofollow a control weight attributes.
1, when a page links added nofollow according to logic speaking spider wouldn't go to crawl to link and not assign the link weight, so that the remaining weights can be allocated to other links;
2, with a nofollow links page and not not included because there are other pages link to this page, if we want to make the search engine completely don't include the page so give this page add < meta name = "robots" content = "nofollow" / > or in the root directory of the web site under the robots.txt file shielding this page link.

"Do Follow" are usually links to your website from other website which Google distinguishes and adds to your website's total ranking power. A lot refer to this as the "Link Juice." While "No Follow" are the links from sites where the webmaster or the owner has added the command "no follow" to the entire outbound links.
So how to know if a website has "Do-Follow" or not?
1. Look at the Page Source. By viewing the page source just right click your mouse and then after that look for a HTML link to the website that is linked to from the website and then finally search for a rel = "no follow" or for example "nofollow">Mark Forums Read</a>.
(Note that the default setting for the link above is "no follow", so when you don't see the rel="nofollow" command then that link is "do follow.")
2. You can use add-ons. Scrapebox and firefox are some examples of add-ons available online which you can use to identify "do follow" or "no follow" links.

If you go through the page source of website, you will find the rel="nofollow" or rel="dofollow" tag which indicate or instruct the search engines whether it should follow the links or not..I agree with that point..Well, "easy" way is to check the source code of the webpage (If there is already a link there). Then you can see in the link itself if it has a nofollow attribute attached.

Yes, websites all start out as do follow as a general rule. The only way they become no follow is by the website owner or editor changing the necessary tags to make it no follow.

You might ask why they would do this. Well, while do follow links might attract some quality and legitimate comments, they can also attract a heavy concentration of spammers. And having spam comments on your site is never good thing.

Technically it is right that no-follow links won't help your ranking. But, that does not mean that they can't help it in a roundabout and indirect way.

These links still hold value in that they are still out there to make your site more visible. And on many occasions, some of the most popular and trafficked sites only allow no-follow links. That being the case, your no-follow ones might actually drive a good bit of traffic to your site.

This can cause a ripple effect that might earn you more organic do-follow links and thus higher rankings.

No-follow blogs are just as important as do-follow ones. You should have a mix of back links for SEO.

Blog comments provide more than just back links too. You can get traffic and leads and those people that go to your blog from a comment you published are more likely to leave a comment on your blog which is also good for SEO.

Hi,

In my opinion, the normal links(backlinks) we are using are dofollow links. Dofollow and nofollow are the values to "rel" attribute of the anchor tag.
Ex: <a href="site url">anchor text</a>

But the nofollow link means the link is present there but due to the nofollow, while crowling the site the search engine will not follow this link.
Ex: <a href="site url" rel="nofollow">anchor text</a>

By default links used in SEO are dofollow.

Nofollow attribute let the robot ask not to crawl the link. And it is of no use as per the perspective of SEO point of view. But do you think only to get your link be crawled, caching, indexing and all. I think one more concern is left there and that is visitor point of view. If a visitor comes to your link he/she will not bother about a link being dofollow or nofollow. But your link will be visited if it does have any value with better content visibility. So why to worry about nofollow. Just be stick with both dofollow and nofollow.

Thanks

I thought I might jump in here to clarify few points.

The "nofollow" is actually an attribute in standard HTML code, and can be added to any link. Although it's generally seen in blog comments to hinder sleazy webmasters from acquiring high ranks through link comment spam. So, the "Nofollow" attribute simply tells the Search engine not to pass on any ranking benefits to the linked page.

As for "Dofollow", with all do respect, there is no such thing as "dofollow" attribute in HTML.

Right click anddddd VIEW Page Source. This will answer all your questions regarding do follow/no follow if you want to look at each site individually. On a side note, Firefox has a plugin for this..could be quicker.

Thanks

Download Affiliorama toolbar, it will red circle all the nofollow links.

It is not waste of time making Nofollow links. My sites get reasonable traffic from comments, but for this to happen you have to post meaningful comments.

Nofollow comments and URL in the comments will make your link profile more natural and genuine.

Thanks

Hi friend,

If you are doing blog commenting, weather they provide "no follow" link.... Don't worry. Off course that corresponding link will not count as back link. But you will have traffic for your site. The back link count is mainly for cross check purpose only.. If a site obtain more traffic means definitely you get more lead to your business..
NOTE :
1. The main thing is post the blog comments in your relevant category only. (i.e., If u having a travel site , you can search the blogs that are related to travel site and then comment)
2. And another is post the comment on the latest blog news only. (i.e., Posted date must be less than 15 days or 1 month)

Thanks

You can check Nofollow, Dofollow by right-clicking on the anchor text or link and select "Inspect element". See if the code contains "rel=nofollow" => this is a No-follow link
<a rel="nofollow" " href="www.abc.com">xyz</a>
Or just install SEO Quake and enable option "Highlight No-Follow"
Hope this helps

Dofollow means Google will pass the page rank.
Nofollow means Google will not pass the page rank.

And in the Search Enigne Ranking, both type of links are similar!

Maintaining the right percentage of dofollow and nofollow is very important. Dofollow links pass link juice but a website that has just dofollow links looks very un-natural. A natural link profile is the most important thing these days.

A no follow link simply means that you will not get the link juice of the PR from your link source. The following will still happen if you get a no follow link from a good source.

1. You will get an additional link indexed for your site WHICH will help in ranking and in a BIG way if its from a popular authority blog in your niche

2. EDU blog comments links are gold even if they are no follow or if you cant put you keyword anchor in them

3. Google will follow the link back to your page

4. Google will still create the symentic relationship between your site and the context of the link source you got the link from

5. Google will still look at it as a vote.

So while NO follow are not AS powerful as do follow links, they are still worth getting especially if its from a big authority site in your niche which can also reward you in terms of targeted referral traffic.

Thanks

No follow links are totally useless especially if you're competing for a highly competitive keyword(s). Don't listen to those who continue to make everyone believe that no follow links carry the same weight as do follow. It's total nonsense. However, its essential to to have both no and do follow links for natural look purposes. Hence, try to concentrate on do follow links, the difference will be enormous. Moreover, if go to the desired blog where you want to post your links, right mouse click and hit view page source. Look for existing links, if you see rel="nofollow" then obviously the link you're about to post will be no follow.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Check what links indexed in Google Webmaster Tools, ->traffic->links to your site -> More -> Download latest links, it will give you detailed listings. You will know definitely what ones are follow links.

I tried some follow links, but wasn't shown on the listings. On the other hand, someone mentioned on the Internet (sorry can't remember the link but if you Google it you will find) that only about 2/3 inbound links were showed on the listings. To me, it's a sure thing if it's on the listings, it's google recognized links.

You can check Dofollow and Nofollow with SEO quake plugins to firefox or google chrome browser.Or you can check it manually going through this methods.
When you are on a page just press ctrl+u and you will see a new tab open.Just press ctrl+f,than you will see a search box appear on the page. Now jut type "nofollow" word on the box and if the site is nofollow than red color word will appear on the page with this word "nofollow", so this is a nofollow site and if nothing shows than it is dofollow site.

I am with the side of giving a good comment if you like it. These days Google is aware a lot and you should forget about the do-follow or no-follow rules. I even don't know who made those rules. It is all up to search engines if the honor your request of no-follow.

And about commenting- make sensible one for the love of the post/article. Don't do it just for the backlinks. If people thinks that you are an expert you will gain more benefit than you thought you'll get from the do-follow.

Many would argue about the value of nofollow but in reality your link under the nofollow website will be counted.

I came across to a website complaining about the service of attracta seo the paid one and the customer claim that all links pointed to her website was all nofollow (which was acknowledged by attracta) and has no value to help her website ranks better in Google.

I do not agree the no follow has no value. Infact my website links to several nofollow website but I am still receiving high volume unique visitors a day minimum of 80k a day. Check my alexa ranking. (Alexa Internet - Website Information) and my site is www.lambingan.net

I am sharing this to clarify the importance of nofollow in SEO. My site is 1 year and a few months I got PR2 in Google and 77,613 global ranking in alexa .

If you want to rank high and achieve a better SERP in Google then all you need to do is hard work. Make sure your post/page is interesting to read and that you need to target the right audience.

Best of luck guys.
