Silo Structure Question

I think I understand the basics of a silo structure, but one thing I am not clear on.

I have a site that is small enough now to show each individual post in the sidebar under its appropriate category. This is set up with custom menus. I prefer to do this, rather than just showing the categories, as long as I have the space.

Is this structure okay? I just want to make sure that I'm not creating "leakage" in the silo structure by having the individual posts listed.

I do not have any cross-linking between posts unless they are in the same category.

Obviously, I'm not really sure what "leakage" is.

For a true silo structure, you would keep everything separated. So from your main page, you would be linking to the index page of each folder, then from that page you would have the navigation to pages within only that folder, plus a link to the home page.

I don't know if it harms the structure by linking to individual posts in the subfolders from the home page, and it may be fine for a small site, but as it grows you likely want to keep the individual post links off the home page and link only to the main navigation page of each folder (or silo) from the home page.

Agree but how about not linking post until they are under same category. I guess posts can be linked is they are somehow related to each other.

So, I take it that for a strict silo structure you shouldn't even have a link to the home page on anything except the category landing pages?

Looking for more opinions this evening.
