In my opinion spun content is dangerous and most of the time it reads as gibberish. Matt Cutts talked years ago about developing the algo to consider the quality of grammar used in content.

Another reason to avoid spun content is to consider it's purpose which is to allow mass publishing of content and links. In the current SEO climate, mass links is a bad idea for most people. Of course if you can make a burst of links look completely natural then great but you need varied anchor text, varied IP's, generic anchor texts, URL anchor texts, image anchor texts, varied article lengths, social signals, varied backlink sources, links on trusted domains etc etc.

One of spun deals here and there will only end in disaster for most people. Reliable SEO now has to be approached in a holistic way which most people either cannot afford or simply don't understand.

It's hard to distinquish well spun content from bad grammar.

When you do a solid paragraph spinning + nr1 best synonym from user favourite database with thebestspinner the articles look pretty well, and only have very few errors in it that you could compare to bad grammar. So it would be close to impossible for Google to detect that.

Auto spun content is going to get a slap from Google. I had read some patents of Google about language identification and grammar detection. They are working on it from long time and i think they will soon roll out any update on it.
As a person i used spun content when i was a newbie but after that i am against it because its just piece of crap created for spamming. Manually spinning is little better as it maintains readability.

I dont think google would start refine websites getting backlinks using spun articles. I think in new Algo change google is trying to detect pages providing backlinks to many irrelevant sites. This is mainly for resisting effect of Public/private blog networks on SERP.

As Nik0 mentioned it would be almost impossible to distinguish among good spun articles and organic rewritten articles. I have enough right to read an article about Barack Obama on New York Times and then post the news in my personal political blogs after rewriting. So if google start slapping spun articles that might kick poor quality spun articles.
