Are you a internet marketer? or somebody that finds keywords and builds links

Until now I think I would have classified myself as the guy who looked for keywords and backlinked to my site, but recently I see myself making the transition into a internet marketer.

How do you know the difference? well if all you do is use micro niche finder, market samurai, traffic travis or Google keyword tool to find profitable keywords so that you can build a site and build backlinks to achieve higher rankings than you are not a internet marketer.


People that fall into this category are the ones complaining about losing their sites or how evil Google is.


Edit: I would like to apologize for the statement directly above, if you have lost your site that means your may have lost your way of providing for yourself and family and that is not something that should be taken lightly. I'm starting to understand more about why people say Google is evil, some people simply feel the need to vent after having all of their hard work lost overnight.
It is my belief that a true internet marketer would be using e-mail list, leveraging social media, networking with other marketers etc just to name a few.

These are things that I used to ignore when ever I heard somebody give this advice but now my main focus is to master the 3 I have listed in addition to many more techniques/methods of marketing out there.

I say all of that to say this, please broaden your horizons don't stick to just finding keywords and building links or you will limit yourself and more importantly your income.

    Focusing on Google is a huge downfall. Sure, they're important, but they're not the only source of traffic. In fact, a lot of Google traffic is fairly valueless. There are many tire-kickers and competitors checking rankings.

    The best bet is to expand on as many platforms as possible. It's ridiculous how many places online I've set up shop. Everything from Yelp through Tumblr and all the second tier ones too. How about an office on Second Life? Sure, I have one of those too.

    Those destinations push people into my funnel and then I keep them in my contact manager/b2b marketing automation software. It's been a ton of work setting it up, but it's worth it. A year ago I was about Google rankings only until I took a beating on the first Panda.

        I like the attitude Ernest. Check out OnlyWire.com and TribePro.com if you aren't familiar with them. Those are both low cost social media marketing methods worth learning about.

        My philosophy is to build as many 'outposts' as possible, in order to lessen my Google dependence.

        B2B marketing automation is expensive, but it has all the features of 'AWeber' with many advantages. This includes whitelisting for highest delivery rates and no need for 'double opt in.'

          I really appreciate you divulging this information, the fact the I have no idea what your talking about is why I aspire to be a true internet marketer and not just some guy looking for keywords and building links.

            My pleasure. I've been 'thinking outside of the box' as much as possible lately. Clearly "IM" and Google Adsense and various means of traditional money making segments are oversaturated. There are way too many cooks in the kitchen, all using the same methods.

            Even "IM product creation" is fraught with peril now. It's getting tougher for 'mom and pops' to make any money in most of these saturated niches. Really, IM success involves finding 'the next big thing' and setting up shop as quick as possible.

            Making as many outposts as possible into a sales funnel seems pretty 'no brainer.'

              I to find myself trying to think outside the box, but my mind just get's bombarded with to many ideas. I thought about making a relationship site because everyone can relate to that so it would be incredibly easy to attract social media traffic, but this idea would take me off my current path of building medical sites. Besides that fact I don't want to be one of those people that starts something and doesn't finish it.

              My long term goals are to build my adsense income to where it once was and use that money to fund other sites using amazon,click bank or any other cpa offers.

              I also want to have a few sites for experimentation purposes.

    @nest28: No i am not agree, what if your site main traffic source was SE? because most of the big marketers rely on SE traffic other than email marketing or social traffic sources.

      Hey you probably from another county I'm from the u.s. and I have to ask people to excuse my bad english lol.

      I don't mean rely on social media or e-mails list but at the same time I don't want to rely on search engines.

      What I do want is to incorporate all of them so that I get traffic from many different places.

    I think starting this week a lot of people are having this same thought. Me, I started thinking this way after Panda, but Penguin has re-affirmed this for me.

    You guys that are wanting to boost your Adsense income, look into building an email list with Feedburner (free) from your existing site traffic.

    Drive traffic to the site from multiple sources, then try & get them on your email list. One of my Feedburner email list is currently converting at around 9% Adsense CTR. The email traffic doesn't even have to visit my site for me to get paid.

    If you already have quality content & give people a reason to optin to your Feedburner email list, it's literally free money.

      Yes blogger has a follow by e-mail widget that I put on all of my sites , If I'm not mistaken it's automatically in sync with feed burner.

    Maybe you should tell that to Adsenseflippers who are mostly building micro sites and flipping them and banking >$20k/month.

    Personally I think this whole social thing is way too time consuming and there are a lot faster ways to make money online by building sites and ranking them. If you want to expand in an unlimited way it's imo all about organizing and outsourcing, and building a following is not something you can easily outsource.

    What I love about SEO is that it's a competitive sport. When I conquer a #1 spot it feels like I just won a trophy. So it's not just about building links, there are so many things involved like one giant puzzle.

Either way they have one way of making money, all I'm saying is I want to reach a level where I have multiple streams of income, so when one avenue becomes outdated I'll have a few others to choose from.

        Thats why they should outsource their SEO to me, no one gets penalized that way

        While I agree with you that it's a good idea to diversify, I'd disagree with you on two points you've made in this thread:

        1. We're not diversified

        We've built a brand that (inside of 12 months) has over 4,000 email subscribers, gets more than 20K visits per month, and regularly gets 50+ comments on a blog post. (And way less than 40% of our traffic is from the search engines) We have a podcast that has had just under 60K downloads, 70+ 5-star reviews, and is currently getting 14K+ downloads and growing per month. We just created a niche site guide that took us months and thousands of $$ to create that we're giving away for FREE, as a thank you to everyone who's supported us.

        Not bad...but I'd also add that this is in ADDITION to our primary business which has always been our outsourcing company in a non-IM space.

        2. Building niche sites and selling them isn't hard...

        It's really not that easy, either. Doing this at scale takes a level of work and process-orientation that most aren't familiar with and would not be able to successfully pull off. If you're saying the only reason you DON'T do that is because you're worried about not being diversified, I'd say that's silly. Get it working at a fairly high-level first and make some cash...diversification can come later.

          I would never want to intentionally harm another marketer's business by bad mouthing them, I would consider that to be right up there with negative seo.

          You guys are successful and make good money from what you do and I have nothing but respect for you, sometimes I forget to think before I say things.

          Diversifying can be done by using a single method.

          Example instead of just selling small niches sites, one could sell small niches sites and large authority sites.

          This is a example on a very small scale , I trying to say even though your method is to sell sites, I'm sure you have found ways to diversify inside of this one method of making money online.

    Wouldn't it also help if you knew where your audience and traffic were hanging out?

    Basically going where your traffic and your audience is?

    So if you know the majority of your audience is hanging out in particular forums or other similar places it would probably make sense to reach them there as opposed to places where they don't hang out in decent numbers correct?

    But if your target audience uses the search engines quite a bit and don't really have a great place to hang out then at least in the beginning you get their attention by ranking in the SERPs and then your site could become THE hang out spot for this particular group...

    Sorry for rambling just thinking out loud and off the top of my head...in a nutshell I'm thinking that you go to where your target audience/target traffic is but you get them in your funnel and coming to your site again and again if possible...easier for some niches than others as well...if your site is about a one off solution it might be a little harder to get them coming back time and time again...

      easier for some niches than others ... is right, if I had a site about tv shows , I would know exactly what to do, where to find traffic it would be easy because everybody loves tv.

      But medical,insurance,finance , what's fun about that? People from social media have short attention spans when it comes to these topics.

      It will be a challenge to get visits to these type of sites I suspect, but I'll try my best.

    Well since you're in the medical education field it sounds like Nest maybe you could do some sort of continuation site....

    If your audience is interested in going into the medical field then maybe you could not only point them in the direction of schools/online schools to attend but information about scholarships (monetize with Adsense or there are a lot of CPA offers out there)...

    Then if you get them on a list you could also promote employment opportunities down the road or information about looking for a job once they get done with school (again monetize with Adsense or related CPA offers)...

    But in the meantime you could also not only promote schools, scholarships, and other similar things but get them on a list and promote educational tools that will help them to either pass classes/get certain certifications or make the whole attending school easier...

    Sorry for rambling again just throwing out some ideas...

      Now You are on to something. For the Medical Niche to get traffic other than SEO I would focus on writing guest posts on other well established blogs that have traffic. I would also find the top ten forums in the medical niche and start post information with my sig link to my website. I would also try to post ads on these websites in an attempt to capture their emails.

      An email list I think is the best way for you to get continued traffic. You can send them offers or send them to your new post or have adsense through feed burner.

      You can also have on your website a section like Angry Night shift Nurse or something. You would Hire nurse that would vent all their frustration out through articles and that would be very entertaining for other nurses.

      For monetization you could sell medical school books and nurse books through amazon.

      That is just a few of the ideas that I have. But the most important in my opinion is the email list. With this you have a source of traffic that you could tap at any time and you can swap email list with other webmasters in your niche.
