Well, let's see: the words on Google WebMaster Central Blog on this subject are:-

    • Google wants to serve up unique results and does a great job of picking a version of your content to show if your sites includes duplication. If you don't want to worry about sorting through duplication on your site, you can let us worry about it instead.
    • Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be penalized. If duplicate pages are detected, one version will be returned in the search results to ensure variety for searchers.
    • Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be placed in the supplemental index. Duplication may indirectly influence this however, if links to your pages are split among the various versions, causing lower per-page PageRank.

I think, strictly speaking, you should be asking here, actually: Adsense / PPC / SEO Discussion Forum

Google will not penalize your website, nor any other search engine. But after latest google algorithm changes, it is much better to stick to original content for a few months and see how "new changes" affect all this.

What is the point in having the same content on more than one page in your site?

Google has changed the way it ranks pages. Websites having duplicate content are not considered to be as good as those having original as well as fresh content.

Secondly, it all depends on search engines as to what content they will index, what content they will show at the top in search queries. You cannot do anything about indexing of duplicate content.

If you don't care about your website's PR or you have a high PR website that is already established, duplicate content is best for you. However, if you have a fairly new website, and you are looking around for backlinks (not direct visitors), duplicate content is not for you.

Lets just remember that Google isn't stupid, and if you have a WordPress site it's pretty understandable that articles will be duplicated in category\tag pages and in author pages too. It's better of course to make it not crawl them, but it's not the end of the world if you don't.
After all - not blocking Google's spiders only means you don't know SEO and therefore have a "natural" website in a way.. ;-)

That of course is to separate "True" duplicate content which is actually copying the same article on different websites. A long as you don't do that you're OK at the least.

There should not be any severe penalty for duplicate contents but you may loose some of the rankings or visitors in case SEs start serving the different urls (with same contents) for different users and for the same query. It is always preferable (not a necessity) to use the unique contents per page.

    Nope, no penalty.

However most likely what will happen is all but one page will end up in Supplemental SERPs.

Once a duplicate page ends up in Supplemental SERPs search traffic will never see the duplicate pages, nobody looks that deep into the SERPs, besides SEOs.

Use a Canonical tag on your pages to tell Google which page you want displayed in the SERPs.

Well more exposure on websites such as stumbleupon. Instead of bookmarking the same article once. I can bookmark it multiple times on different urls, adding much more traffic to my website

    Thanks this is great

Why would you have the same content in more than 1 page on your website ehh? Duplicate content doesn't penalize your website but it will affect the ranking of your website for sure because Google doesn't like duplicate content.

You should not use same content in many pages of your website. It'll make your website poor to the visitor.
