SEO New date for an old post?

I'm updating an old post with some continued information. It's 2 years old and is number 4 in Google for it's keyword.

Would it be advisable to update the timestamp on it to reflect it being fresher?

Will this hurt my current rank? or rather what's the likely outcome of hurt-vs-help with my rank?

More than a sentence or two changing on your site page can cause it to dance a bit. So yes, I would change the date to indicate freshenss and see what happens.

While I'll update the content regardless, I'm curious to know if doing this then pinging it has the possibility of raising it's rank or if it won't do anything.

Thank you for your input, Jeannie.

I don't ping my sites much anymore. I let google find it on its own. Or through blog comments, etc.

      You are welcome.
