    You need backlinks to gain Google's trust. Google ranks pages based on what it calculates to be the most relevent content. That usually means the content is not only related to the keyword but also that the source is authoritative.

    So it starts with on-page factors but in order for you to gain authority, you need "votes". Those votes are called backlinks.

    A lot of people build backlink because google measure your backlink towards you authority on that particular topic. That is one, but to look in another perspective, the more backlink we have, we are actually bringing people from other sites to know about us and find us. Of course if only posting in those syndicate forum/ log for backlink building, that will not have such value as no human is there to read them. So well, build backlink in site that human read and relevant to play good with google and at the same time build good traffic to our own site.
