No changes, all sites are buried deep at #600+

Will build new sites now, that's the plan.

Neither of my large sites have recovered. I attempted to dilute my over optimized anchor text by posting generic and raw URL anchored backlinks using social bookmarks, wikis, and article marketing. I suspect that Google has not found all of these backlinks as of yet. So I am unsure that this strategy works or not. I guess I will have to wait for Penguin 1.2 to be sure.

Luckily, I still get a good amount of traffic from Yahoo and Bing to one of these sites and I still rank for the long tail keywords.

I have built two new properties to replace my slapped sites. One is already ranking in the top 3 for its main keywords. The other I just started up. If my old sites don't recover in 30 days. I will have replacements ready for them by then.

        Good luck everyone!

Mine also got a #600+ penalty for most keywords. I got unnatural link message in WMT on Mar 29. After 1 week my site throwed from front page to #600+ . Is it penguin or something else?

I am targeting around 6 keywords on homepage. Now 2 keywords showing homepage on around #50 to #70 the positions. Main keywods are showing home page on 66th page or beyond #600 th positions but one inner page having few backlinks is ranking around #50 positions. What kind of penalty is this? I am patiently waiting since 2 months.

Is waiting even more worth? or should I start with a new domain? considering my niche is very easy and it will only take 1 or 2 months to get a front page ranking.

Over optimization penalties do exist. Whether they are Penguin based it not known; Anchor Text Optimization – How Much Is Too Much? « Jonathan Leger – SEO And Internet Marketing Blog

I know this myself because my own sites which dropped from #1 down to #500+ are not from lost backlinks.

        It's a penalty for sure.

For most sites I don't see any positive changes unfortunatly, but one of my sites which got affected by Penguin, is now on page 1 for its main keyword.

The only change I did since Penguin rolled out (26th April), was change the backlink anchor text so less backlinks are targetting the main keyword. However, according to Bing Webmaster tools inbound links report data, it doesn't have the updated anchor text listed so I don't know if changing the anchor text had any positive effect.

To be honest this one hit me the worst of all of them.

I had a site the I'd received warning for irregular back linking back in March -- then over the past months nothing -- it remained steady in the top of Page 1.

Now last night...its now #80 and many keywords dropped right off the charts.

I believe its in error but then again...who can I talk to at Google? Nobody. Its brutal. It's not a "money site" or an "affiliate site" or anything like that either...its a news portal site.

To top it all off I had some lunatic SEO stalker guy doing negative SEO on me so if anyone tells you it doesn't work...they're dead wrong.

What have I learned? Start knocking off your competitors with negative SEO by building spammy links to their sites. They'll be knocked off in no time.

        Don,

I had a guy offer me $25 to "off" my competition by blasting them with 1,000,000 backlinks. I think this totally unethical and I feel for you. I can't believe how cold people can be when it comes to money. Hang in there my friend.

  • The penguin update was completed several weeks ago yet my site was not affected until last Tuesday. (5-22-12) My best keyword had me ranked between position 2-4 on page one of google. Auto insurance Cincinnati. Now I'm no where to be found. I did focus on backlink anchor texts as Auto insurance cincinnati. The percentage is only about 6% compared to my other keywords inks.

What is extremely confusing is that I checked competitors that previously never showed up on the radar and they now are on page 1 of google, but what is almost difficult to grasp is that one of the now page 1 competitors has over 50% of his links auto insurance Cincinnati, and another has significantly more than my 6%!

    Any thoughts?

Why do you think this may not be Penguin. It absolutely could be if it happened close to the first roll out. 600+ drop could still be Penguin.

Im going to make bold claim. Test getting rid of Analytics and webmaster tools on a few sites and see what happens. Even Google cannot monitor every site on the net so why give them the information that may go against you. It is logical to assume that sites linked with analytics and webmaster would be the prime choice for Google. The key issue with the recent updates is that SEO simply has not changed that much. Google has just got better at policing it. Tools like analytics and webmaster help them keep an eye on what you are doing.

It's idiotic to think you can hide from Google by removing (or not using) Webmaster Tools or Analytics. Tools like GA and WMT primarily help you. If you don't want your data in GA to be shared anonymously and in aggregate, then they have an option to disable all data sharing.

In this age, a good SEO will NEED to monitor his link reports in WMT like a hawk. You'd basically be blind if you don't have WMT. The third party tools are lacking.

If you have hundreds or thousands of spammy sites, then yeah ..it might a good idea to put them on separate hosting and avoiding linking them together.

But if you're going after a sustainable, long-term traffic source from Google, you should have NOTHING to hide. If one were to believe your statements, you'd think good sites would be rewarded for having good metrics which can be seen from giving Google access with WMT or GA, but we all know that ain't so.

There is nothing compared to the WMT, which tool will tell u the impressions of a keyword you are ranking for without the user clicking on it? if you didn't know that you are ranking and nobody clicked then you wont know.

My problem with recent updates by Google is the vulnerability factor to negative SEO. The entire idea that some competitor can fire a ton of shady low quality backlinks at you and get you deindexed is frightening to say the least.
