Made An Interesting Discover About Site Age And SERP Listing

Let something brew long enough and no matter how crappy it is, it'll rise to the top.

As most of you may or may not know, I am heavily into Magic the Gathering.

Well, in doing research for my new book on the subject that I'm writing, I went
to look up a list of terms to make sure I didn't miss anything. In short, I was
looking for a glossary.

In doing my search, I found that the number 2 result was a site that didn't
have anything to do with Magic the Gathering in its domain and hadn't been
updated since 1994.

18 years.

The game has changed so much in that time that the glossary at that site
was almost useless.

So why number 2 in the listings?

One can only conclude that it's because it's been around for so long. There
is no other logical explanation.

18 years with no new content in a niche that is changing EVERY 3 MONTHS
with new cards, abilities and plenty to be added.

Now, maybe you don't want to wait 18 years for your site to jump to the top
of the SERPs but it's plain as the nose on my face that if you keep something
around long enough, no matter how bad and irrelevant it is, it'll get somewhere.

Imagine how well your site will do after 18 years if you actually keep it updated
with relevant info.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but without looking at any other data it is impossible to say that it is the age alone that caused the site's ranking (although I'm sure it is not hurting).

I personally think all the hype about updating your content to get good rankings is hogwash. There are plenty of sites ranking very well that have not been touched in years.

One thing I would look at is the age of the backlinks. I would bet that is playing a more significant role in the rankings than just the age of the site itself. If it has a lot of good links that are all 10+ years old, that is significant.

I have some domains that have been in my dev pile for 5 years or more, and some are pretty good keywords & relevent now so maybe there is hope for them.

I've seen real old sites with hardly any backlinks that were very tough to outrank, so you sure got a point yes.

Age has long been regarded as a very positive signal. Unfortunatly it is the one thing you can not actually 'work harder' on. You can't even buy it for an existing site.

Its known that age is a HUGE factor in SERPs, but still i got new fresh domains pass sites from 2002.. so its not only that, as usual there is lots of factors to their rankings.

Age of the domain doesn't matter with SEO.

You said the site is 18 years old, it's probably got a lot of quality links, even If the content is outdated. Google doesn't care If the content is old or new.
