What is the best way to analyse your competition and to have a good idea as to how long you can get to the No 1 position in google for a keyword?

I always type in my keyword into Godaddy and see if any other EMDs are in on it.

if they are, I pop them into Market Samurai and check if they are new or old; strong or weak.

Then I search the keyword myself on google and check if there are any optimized sites for keyword (I only check first 5 pages). I do this with bing, yahoo, and google.

    That's it.

Is there any way of telling how long it takes to get to No 1 position by spying your competitors?

I check the top 10 pages and see if the PR is 0 or N/A.

I also look if the keyword is in the title, and in the description. If not I GO ALL OUT and destroy them.

    SEOQUAKE is good for this.

I look at how many results are shown on google search engines, the PR, and the kw if it's in the title and the description. Usually I get my sites indexed fast already on the first page.

A couple social bookmarking and boom.

Do you look at any criterion? such as number of kw, PRs of the top 3 sites, etc?

Yes, if the PRs are 0 or N/A that's a great sign for me.
