Meta keywords and description - worth it?

I know the title tag is really important, however are meta tags for keywords and descriptions still valid? I'm working on a store that will contain hundreds of products, and not sure if I should spend time creating keywords and descriptions for each product.

I still have a lot of work to do, but the site is coming along nicely. I will be promoting it using the methods I've learned here, and of course creating a lot of fresh and original content.

Thanks!

Meta description is still a good idea, although the search engines will sometimes use their own instead of yours. Keyword tags I wouldn't bother with.

I use keywords, but only 1-2 on the main page. Some search engines (like chinese ones etc) may still use them.

Yeah, I noticed when I put a description in for one of my products it hurt my rank, so I took it out and let Google create one. I guess it depends what keyword you're going after too. As for keywords, I have not been using them for my product pages. Once my site gets indexed, I'll better be able to determine which works best.

I provide SEO services for a living. Here's my 2 cents: I wouldn't waste your time with the keyword tag. But the description tag, yes. It may not be a major ranking factor anymore, but it's usually what the search engines use in the SERPs...so use it to get the click with a good call to action. Keep it under 160 characters, preferably under 150.

I found a really comprehensive article on Metadescriptions that you could check out: How to Create a Meta Description Tag for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Not sure if I could post a link here but I read it and it was really helpful. Hope it's helpful for you too.
