Why do I rank higher initially when copying content?

Here's one for you Warriors

My celebrity news site currently posts 10-12 posts daily. They are indexed quickly and are page 1/2/3 immediately. Now here's something:

If I write a unique article, it's sometimes nowhere to be seen or spammy sites rank above.

If I go to a popular site like TMZ, copy/paste 4-5 paragraphs, add my own intro and outro lines and change the title, my post ranks page 1/2 immediately. I include a link back to the source and make it nofollow.

Any ideas?

I've spent the last 59 months building 412 MFA sites. Each site averages 8 cents per day...I said average, some make up to 17 cents per day, PASSIVE INCOME! This income allows me to live comfortably and buy ANY flavor Jolly Rancher or Skittles I desire. Don't give in to fear, it CAN be done!

Usually I completely rewrite their articles so that it's 100% unique or close to it, so no duplicate issues whatsoever.

The weird thing is, when I'm copy/pasting 4-5 of their sentences (so 90% duplicate), it still ranks very high, if not higher... Weird.. Makes me wonder if writing unique content is even worth it!

Copy/paste content, add a few of my own lines and a NoFollow link..

This sounds alot like the whole Google Trending thing as they are looking at the "hottest" content and updated news.

Your posts may be on page 1/2, but are people ALWAYS searching for what your posting? Or does it fizzle out and you have to keep adding new content?

Personally I would rather rank for keywords that have steady traffic using quality unique content versus having to come up with stuff to post everyday.

Not saying your business model doesn't work, because obviously you're getting traffic...it's just not for me.

Nice thread though, it's some food for thought!

Interesting. Same thing with me. I've copied best and top ten lists in the past, added an intro and outro and they rank higher than the original. These are posts that have stayed in the top 5 for more than a year now and were never affected by panda/penguin. I can only guess that my sites have higher overall authority than the sites I copy.

It was probably just a coincidence, does it last long? Or is it in the tough competition keywords?
