Two Websites -- Same branding, Same products, Different Content

Hey guys,
We're currently working on redesigning our website, and we have some reservations of going straight to the new site (different cart, etc).
One plan we had was to keep the old site live, and making the new site a slightly different domain. Is this frowned upon by Google? Is this frowned upon as far as SEO goes?
