Got an Email from Adsense

Adsense sent me an email today.

Looks like they are getting rid of Adsense for feeds, ugh!

I have a couple of email list I built with Feedburner in order to monetize directly inside my email list (Feedburner email). I'm not sure what I'll do with my email list now, might have to look into migrating over to Aweber & monetize with something else, maybe my own product, not sure yet.

This blows because I was earning good money with adsense directly inside emails, traffic never had to visit my site for me to get paid, not that visiting my site is bad (lol), just easier to monetize directly inside the email, skips a lot of steps the traffic had to take for me to earn $$.

Those Ads inside the emails were easily quadruple the earnings on regular Adsense Ads (consistently $3 - $8 per click).

I'm not bitching or anything, the free ride was good while it lasted.

Here's the Adsense email:

Hi,

We're contacting you because you've enabled AdSense for feeds in your AdSense account. After carefully evaluating the product, we've decided to retire AdSense for feeds.

Starting December 3, 2012, we'll discontinue serving ads via AdSense for feeds on RSS feeds and you'll no longer see feed units in your My ads tab. To check if you're currently generating any revenue from AdSense for feeds, visit your "Products" performance report and look for recent data for "AdSense for feeds".

Please note that reporting on your feed ad units will remain available following the product retirement. FeedBurner URLs powered by Google will continue to function, but will no longer serve ads. As a result, it won't be necessary to redirect your subscribers to different URLs or to take any other action in your account. For more details please visit the AdSense Help Center.

Rest assured, this upcoming change won't affect the availability of other AdSense products that you're currently using.

We appreciate your understanding and thank you for your patience as we continue to develop new features and offerings within AdSense.

Sincerely,
The Google AdSense Team

      Yes, it sucks.

The reason its sucks is the only thing I was doing was changing the dates on really old evergreen blog post for my file download sites (2,500+ pages).

All I had to do is login every couple of days & change blog post dates to bump the old blog post to the top of the Feedburner Feed which would automatically send out a new email to my email list. Inside the email was my Adsense Ad, which could only be done with a Feedburner Feed.

If they would have never stopped Feedburner/Adsense I could have cashed in on this forever (2,500+ pages of evergreen content). By the time I finished sending out 2,500 emails (2-3 per week) my email list would have forgotten about the first email/content. Repeat...

They're likely just moving to shutdown the whole Feedburner service. Bloggers are making noise about it so hopefully they won't do that.

That's my main concern right now, my email list.

Now I'll have to come up with a great piece of free content to motivate the list to optin on another email list. I've got about 10 or so good files/downloads that I was planning on selling, might have to bribe the list with those files just to stay in contact with them. I was planning on selling these files, until I got that email from Adsense.

If you have a Feedburner email list (I think you mentioned before that you do), you might want to go download a backup CSV file of your email list. That's what I'm getting ready to do now.

I'm not pissed or anything. Sure it blows & it's a hassle, but getting pissed off doesn't put money in my pocket.

I've got a few options, my only concern right now is my Feedburner email list, I'm not sure about the fate of Feedburner. If G is pulling the plug on Adsense inside Feedburner Feeds, I wonder what they'll do with Feedburner. Adsense was G's money maker for Feedburner.

I'm thinking I need to create a killer piece of content & persuade my list to signup on a self hosted email list (Aweber), before I lose my list.

They didn't mention anything about killing off Feedburner, but If their not earning money to support Feedburner I have a feeling they'll drop Feedburner next. IDK, I just don't want to lose my list.

One thing that would piss me off is If G keeps showing Adsense Ads inside the Feedburner emails after December 3, 2012. If I find out that's their plan (cutting out affiliates for something we built (email list), I'll completely drop Adsense just as fast as I signed up 6 years ago.

I'll leave one of my Feedburner email list intact (smaller list) just to see what the Feedburner emails look like after December 3, 2012.

Lol, I have my share of pissed off days just like everyone else.

I'm just not sure where all this is leading, my gut feeling says Feedburner will shut down next. It has to be very expensive to keep Feedburner running & I doubt G will want to keep a money pit, which is what Feedburner would be without Adsense Ads.

I just don't get why G is pulling the plug on this. If I was making better money on Feedburner/Adsense than any other type of Adsense, surely G was making a killing from Feedburner/Adsense.

I've been working on promoting a Clickbank product that has been converting a lot better than Adsense on one of my smaller download sites, I dropped Adsense on that small site to focus on CB (better conversions). I've worked on that CB project all afternoon/night. Maybe this Feedburner thing is a message to fall back & regroup?

Modify your advertising. Replace the Adsense ads with something else.

You could either add a plugin that places ads directly in your content, or you could modify the feed footers and place ads there automatically.

I have done this before with: WordPress › Ozh' Better Feed « WordPress Plugins

This doesn't make any sense to me. Why would Google make a decision like that when they know their customer base is starting to go straight to Amazon and skip their search engine? What company doesn't like diversifying and improving the various ways to increase the exposure of their advertisers and at the same time increase their bottom line?

I don't mind all the panda/penguin updates but sometimes I wonder what motivates Google to make the strange decisions that they do. I use avantlink ads and feedburner, I hope they don't end up scrapping feedburner but I think I may export to
Aweber as well just to be on the safe side.

Yeah, just read the email myself. This was the only part and reason I was keeping Adsense around because I was finally started to create decent income from this feature.

Oh well, I am starting to see if you can make money with Adsense it means you can make more with something else..just need to find a way to replace this is all.

It seems that each decision and change that Google is taking lately is a bad one. I wonder if they still realize that their empire is based on us, and that they also need us like we need them. If they will go on like this, I see a future fall.

    Yukon,

Interesting that I thought of you when I read an email from one of the affiliate vendors I am with this morning. They are offering what they are saying is a much better system along with a $100 bonus for every 1000 subscribers you import.

The below is a non-affiliate link describing their offer - you will have to sign up for their affiliate program to use it, of course, but there seems to be positive feedback from others like yourself who have been affected by Googles feedburner abandonment - hope this helps -

I don't know If any of you remember the old Feedburner/Adsense threads I posted in (lot of related info.), shortly after I posted in those threads (maybe around the first of 2012?) Feedburner completely removed the new Admin panel from inside the Feedburner Admin.

The new Admin. panel was awesome, you could watch everything happening with the feed in real time, about a month later the entire new Admin. panel just disappeared & all that was left was the old crappy default Feedburner Admin.

Still looking at my options, I have a backup of all the email address saved off-line.

Yukon is not one to jump on the bandwagon of dissing google.
Like others, me included, we adapt. Some people can't
or won't, so they just go cry in a corner.

This has nothing to with google being mean, nasty, or other
      such rot.

I knew soon after yukon posted this, that's what this thread
      would morph into.

I also got the same email, just when I had feeds figured out.
They allow more than 3 ad blocks, and it was just beginning to
      gel.

Oh well, that's life. You adapt.

I guarantee Yukon already has tricks up his sleeves, or some
      in his mind.

Feeds was probably abused way too much. And the fact that
your ads appear on others site's, maybe, could lead to more
      invalid clicks and click fraud.

People need to realize this: (I know Yukon does) Google
makes decisions for the better of the program, or at
least that's one reason. Anyone involved with adsense needs
to realize the more google weeds out certain things, the
better the overall program will be.

I remember when they got rid of video ads as well. They used
to pay for picasa downloads, among other things.

In fact, I can't even remember half the stuff in the
past 4 years that google has canned from adsense.
And unlike the replies here, the earth did not swallow
      people up.

The problem is, the more people try and shmooze adsense,
the more google cracks down. So the next time you
see someone breaking the rules or shmoozing, slap them
down. They are really hurting your bottom line.

I made a recent thread about how I was able to see my ads
on squidoo. Two days later, boom, feeds are gone from adsense.
If I was into conspiracies, I'd say "G" reads this forum....

When I started seeing the basically free clicks coming from this feature I knew it was only a matter of time. It just seemed to easy to game it if you really wanted too. The funny part of your post is how people do complain about Adsense and yet stay there. If it doesn't work for you, move on. Maybe it is the fact I have worked for very large corporations and banks before but people need to grasp this is their business, they need to run it in a responsible way as they see fit. They need to protect their revenue stream or we will all be back to using Lycos. *shudders*

I'm ok with change as long as it's something better for everyone involved. If G keeps running Adsense Ads inside my Feedburner emails after Dec. 3, that wouldn't benefit me.

I'm ok with pulling the plug on the entire Feedburner/Adsense, but If they're removing me from the business to boost their earnings on the same Adsense inside emails/feeds without those Ads being affiliate Ads, I'm not ok with that. Might not ever happen, we'll see.

I generate niche traffic outside of Google SERPs, so I'm putting Adsense Ads in front of laser targeted traffic that Google wouldn't have for it's Adwords bidders, I don't generate traffic for free. Granted the amount of traffic I generate probably isn't even a blip on their radar, but it's about business, If I don't profit then it would be time to move on.

This has nothing to do with Adsense or Google, I've been working on moving into creating my own niche products. I've sold a few of my own products on my old download sites. Right now I'm at the start of entering a new niche that is extremely profitable, more importantly it's a niche I enjoy. I enjoy my old Adsense sites niche, years go by & I'm interested in new things. The old download sites are evergreen so letting them sit isn't a big deal, they'll still earn money.

      You missed the gravy train.

Seriously anyone that could retain traffic with an email list could have profited from the Feedburner/Adsense emails. Set the email to only show a single snippet of text & 1 Adsense Ad, nothing else on the email page. Couldn't have been any easier.
