lol well depending on Google is dangerous and this is one of the last sites that I am dealing with..I really don't care but I want to see the impact because Google said its impacting only 0.3% of the English sites

Congrats to the winners and my condolences to those on the losing end. With two Google updates each and every day of the year, it's tough to get excited anymore.

Google will keep updating until all those who can afford to pay buy ads from them. Getting relevant organic results is getting more and more difficult with each passing update.

Google has redesigned their web page to de-emphasize the organic search so much that the traffic sources keep dwindling too. It's pay for play time.

Actually it is very very easy to get solid consistent organic traffic from Google, every update is like getting a few high PR links for free.

Hmm. There was a Panda refresh on 9/18 and then an update 10 days later. Now we have a Penguin refresh. Wonder when the "jolting and jarring" Penguin update will be?

        Fun times!

Really? Do you have a strategy for that? Please share it with us. And please don't say 'write great content'. As we are doing that only.

Write great content AND target keywords & products that a million other people are not. Really, that's all I do. There are many others who have taken my lead and started doing exactly this and they are seeing awesome results, despite the latest round of updates.

EDIT: Looked at your laptop site. With so much advertising above the fold, you are asking for trouble.

Seriously this is all I do 3 times each week:
          1. Article: about 500 words, 1 - 2 images, 500-3000 kw search, 1 mil comp
          2. Facebook and Twitter account for the website: Each article gets a link
          3. Follow Like: Use if this not only gets you traffic, indexed very fast and if you targeted your article correctly it will high rank in the SERP.

      2. Created a facebook and twitter page for the site

      3. Have an account at Follow Like and social bookmarking accounts for it to aim too.

      4. I write 3 articles a week, each has an image. (I never release all three on the same day)
4a. Each article I make a facebook and twitter post
4b. Add the link to Follow Like.

      Repeat like clock work.

Article Research, all of the tools I use are free tools.
      Keyword Spy
      Google Search

*Sometimes will use Adwords, I opened an account just to do research but never used it for anything else*
I pick a desired topic to write about and then drill down until I find something that gets about 3k searches and around 1 mil in competition.

      Base Article Format
      1 image
Keyword in the title (H1 Tag), first sentence, last sentence and related partial keywords in sub sections of the article using H2 tags
I start with a goal of 500 words but if it is 400 who cares, 700 who cares. I let the topic decide the length.

      That is all I do.
This site gets 1.5k unique visitors each day at this moment and grows steadily each week and each update.
Thanks for sharing. Didn't know articles still worked.

If you mean articles as in your website content then "still works" is a huge understatement. It has taken me months to figure out the right things to do but at the same time can be completed with minimal work/time. This allows me to get to what is important, the content. I have tried different sites, methods, ways to backlink and such but each had their own little downfall.

Just thought of something else I do which helps.. will add to the above post to keep it all in one post

Honestly I got sick from depending on Google, I only look at 1 website and once I lose all the rankings then I am done with it. I believe the amount and effort we put is not worth it..if I really want to make real money then I need to create a real product and depend on "word of mouth" which is the best marketing technique

Its rather easy actually. Do what others are not. For example, I (and GGPaul, among others) target Amazon products that nobody else is promoting. I promote these products on a branded domain.

Since I don't do any manual backlinking, I typically avoid Penguin-like penalties.

Since my content is good, Panda usually leaves me alone.

Since I target low competition stuff, I generally index and rank on page one within minutes for sites that are at least a few days old.

Since my traffic is targeted, my conversions are usually very good.

Man, there you go again telling people the truth that they don't want to hear. You know you're going to get hammered for that!

Very few will take this advice, and unfortunately many continue to complain with every passing Google update.

Well, one trick is don't be afraid to ask. Just make sure you ask the ones that know wth they're talking about. Wolfmmiii, Yukon, Nest, Mike ANthony, Paulgl etc. etc.

You can even ask that Alexa Smith chick, I'm scared of her though >.<.

You want some tips? Simple but HARD to do: Make a site that people will enjoy. And something that you love.

If you don't care about google you must have a business that makes good money without google ranking!

Those of us who depend on google for ranking CAN'T stop caring about google.

(Yes I know: we need to get our traffic elsewhere... Easier said than done.)

Actually I think it won't get much worse:

    - EMD benefit is gone
    - Poor grammar/spelling will hurt you
    - Excessive use of affiliate links or advertisements punishes you
    - No anchor variety will bite you
    - Poor distribution of low pr vs high pr will get you screwed

5 simple rules to follow people, how hard can it be?

We're just dealing with an algorithm, not some super human!

Actually it can be hard cause everyone depends on:

    - the EMD bonus
    - $5 articles
    - poor monetizing skills
    - only focusing on 1 keyword per site
    - software that only creates pr n/a links

    Now the solution:

    - use branded domains
    - run your articles through grammar/spelling check tools
    - don't use affiliate links on your homepage and/or limit it to max 2 links per page
    - build somewhat larger sites with 20+ pages so you can target more keywords
    - start buying expired domains to get high PR links or buy them from services if it's to much work

I have an exact match domain and I lost rankings on 4 keywords that were on p1. They didn't just drop but went from p1 to beyond page 30!

This is what p*sses me off about google. It's one thing to lower your rankings, but quite another to take your rankings and completely obliterate them.

Another thing: Google COULD tell people ahead of time: "Look, this is what we're trying to minimize or eliminate and we're going to put out an algorithm change dealing with it in 2 months. So in the interest of cleaning up what we don't like, here's what this is about..."

But no, they'd rather just completely EFF you and have you wake up one day and find your income-producing site is now gone.

Now, with this latest effing of my site, this is a GOOD page. It has no spam. It has information - accurate information about water filters, comparing them and letting an intelligent consumer make his/her choice based on facts, data, reviews and so on.

So why would google punish such a site just because I happen to have given it an exact match domain?

And here's the really WEIRD part! : The keyword of the EMD is the ONLY keyword that did NOT get yanked. It's the other keywords - of much higher traffic - that were obliterated from the SERPS.

Gawd, I can't tell you how much I hate google. And not just for this but for many things. Don't even get me started!

Actually, Google had indicated about a year ago that they were looking at a solution to the EMD problem.

As far as other major updates, Google has pretty much always preached that spammy backlinks and poor content are a bad idea. Panda and Penguin just brought the algorithm more in line with what they had always been stating.

I don't care about exact match searches. I never even look at keyword tools. The number of buyers is not related to the number of people promoting any given product. I post product reviews and most of them rank very easily. Some will get lots of traffic and some will get none. In the end, I get lots of targeted traffic that converts.

There really is nothing to keep up with. When I first explained to GGPaul how I was doing things, he was a bit skeptical as are most people but in the end, he had some faith and ran with what I was telling him. He is very successful with it now.

      What did I tell him?

      I told him:
      • to target low-comp products because since nobody else is promoting those, Google is practically begging for content for those products.
      • to provide helpful content and not even necessarily lots of it. A few hundred words is usually sufficient. The content he provides should help the user and make the user want to come back again.
      • to stick with niches he knows. If you know nothing about hammer drills, you can't possibly provide any kind of valuable information or opinions.
      • to stop worrying about backlinks and worry about content instead.
      • to post content consistently to keep the spiders coming back frequently.

He followed this advice to a "T" and is now reaping the rewards.

Do these same things and there is nothing from Google to "keep up with". You are doing exactly what they've been asking for for years.

This must be the information I've been looking for. Thanks for this wolfmmiii!

I have created an Amazon review site but it got hit a little with the EMD and now Penguin 3 it totally lost in serps. The content was an exact copy from Amazon but I still got long tail traffic to my niche.

I can 100% back this up based on my own experience. The key is really in your content these days. The more, the merrier.

It's up to a point that I really don't bother with creating links anymore. I spend all my time and effort for our sites, not chasing links out there and it's paying off.

So the types of pages you're creating are basically unique? The reason most people build backlinks to their pages is because the page is based on keywords and there are already many competing pages. So how are you coming up with what to write about?

By all means, do NOT listen to me. I'm not at 1,000 posts yet. Better listen to someone that's still focused on web 2.0 properties using Xanga, Tumblr and blast feeding it with stuff like "hello, hi, I like the {keyword insert} here."

It's 11:34 PM, we are in a long distant relationship . I'm on the forum, so she can go watch her favorite TV shows like Peewee Herman or something.

They are all product reviews mate. But all are well researched; we don't allow "beating around the bush" type of content. We look at what the consumers ask and talk about each product and focus our reviews on those points.

The sites generally start slow, but after a certain number of posts and around the 1-1.5 month mark, they gain traction. In the end, the site ends up with 100s of keywords on top 10 without a single link (except for Onlywire, which I assume is what Wolf is also using).

Like Wolf, I don't look at keywords at all; just focus on products and creating good reviews.

PS: And our reviews are not 1000+ word reviews, we generally use reviews between 300-500 words that focus on the important stuff without any filler text.

Got it. Now I see why you don't need links. I assume you're targeting new products or if they're existing products, a different angle. Like "Anyone tried the Model X yet?" etc. Thanks for the insight. I've never really messed with Amazon but you guys are making it sound almost too easy

I go for both new and popular products mate. And no new angle except for well researched and to-the-point reviews.

It's easy because you focus on your own property rather than chasing links. So, everything we do adds to the power and the authority of the sites (as it gets more and more relevant, no-BS) content.

This way, at least, I end up having sites that I can be proud of

It's easy work actually. I try to spend an hour or two per day posting reviews. Since they are shorter (as mentioned above), they are easier to write. The hardest part is formatting the reviews but I have my own plugins that do that for me.

My titles would be Donut Shop Medium Roast Reviews and K-Cup for Keurig Brewers Review. Then I'd use variations of those as H2 and H3, etc.

I wouldn't target any specific keywords, but probably end up getting traffic from a lot of keywords like K-Cup reviews, K-Cup for Keurig reviews, etc. At least that has been the case with all our reviews so far.

So, I have a domain name matched to my main keyword. I have thick content around that keyword, plus the name of the business is the keyword. My website dropped not only from page one, for this specific word, but from the #1 spot to.. page 28. The keyword has around 90k local searches a month, it's a local business. In addition, my website dropped from first page for 50+ keywords. There are maybe a couple of keywords that placed themselves on page 2. Everything else page 10+. Interestingly enough, I have no backlinks for 99% of those keywords. I have content, that I wrote myself and posted on the website. I am not hug on SEO. I have read a whole lot of books, I do my on page SEO and I don't spam. The rest of my competitors have...20,000+ backlinks...if you follow some of them you get the PR 1 web forum posts or blog comments that make no sense "hi, i love your post BUY CHEAP DOG FOOD on quantum mechanics...". I have.. around 260 backlinks.
I guess I am just blowing off steam, i wouldn't really call this a constructive post. My website, is an online store, if that matters. Seeing the garbage that my competitors do, SEO wise, I don't understand what google really punishes with their updates. Why didn't I drop a couple of positions, but 10s of pages? I am starting to think that this is personal. Maybe I bullied Larry Page as a kid, i don't know.
Is there a way to recover from this? Should I just register a new domain name and begin ranking for it? Sell the business?

      I sympathize and empathize.
I think it's kind of arrogant for those who are NOT hit by an algorithm change to just assume that everyone who was hit, deserved to be hit. That was not the case with Penguin and it is not the case with this one.

My sites always have well written content which I spend hours putting together, yet one site was KILLED by Penguin (apparently due to some bad backlinks a SEO co. made for me but I thought they were white hat, only to find out they weren't. But penguin was supposed to be about "web spam" which my sites were not. (Maybe the links were though.)

But this time one of my sites was killed again and that site had no spammy links and has great content, but google apparently decided to punish me ONLY because of an exact match domain...?!

To those who have not been hit: Google sucks and I imagine that if you have not been hurt by google yet, some day you will be. When you are, you won't like hearing people say "you deserved it", especially if you didn't.

I read a lot of terrible stories but people that *sound* like they have created a pretty damn good site. Personally I don't think it's quite settled yet and there may be a moderate pendulum back for the *good* sites.

I think the people high-fiving themselves right now are fools, this stuff ain't over yet.

Thanks for all the intel on how to build review sites .. that will be deindexed next year.. but I will build a few and see what I can earn until that time.

I have already bought my branded domain back in early Sept. I will try to hold out until the turn of the year to switch it over ..

Hope some people start seeing some recovery late this week.

WMT defaults to a range of a month, so you're still seeing your average over the last month. if your ranking dropped end of Sept, change your range from that date on. Look to the right, near the top.

Yup. I get this question so much it's not funny... set the f****** ranges correctly, lol.

Great update so far! After having half of my portfolio wiped out in April it's really good to not have lost a single page/site this time around (and that includes Panda/EMD/Penguin). I was dreading this update waiting for something to go wrong somewhere. F*** yeah wooohooooooooooooooooooo!
