absolutely not. Backlinking is still as much part of SEO as content. Both are necessary for a quality site with secure rankings. No-ones going to backlink to you if they can't see your content unless you're using other means of getting traffic rather than just organic searches.

The best advice that I can give you is to take another domain and run all your test on that.

Second backlinks are still a part of seo, and they have an important role.

And one more think. You need to rank high to get traffic, you will not rank higher if you have more traffic.

Best answer -- it depends. I have numerous sites ranking very high in Google without many backlinks at all. Note that I didn't say "none." I've found that the key is to find optimal keywords to leverage -- ie. those that get enough traffic to matter, as well as have a relatively low number of competitors for those keywords. If you do have excellent content, complete solid on-site SEO, and leverage social media to some extent, you'll do fine. It's all in working with the right keywords at the get-go and then leveraging from there. Backlinks still matter, but not at the expense of loading up on crap links just for the sake of getting them.

You'll probably get a few people that say "it's all about the content." Backlinks, IMO, are still incredibly important.

My formula is always: Low competition, quality content and proper on-page SEO, & quality backlinks.

If you're going after the right keywords and are properly optimizing your site & content it's not going to take too many backlinks to rank. I'd rather go after lower competition but extremely buyer oriented keywords. But this is because I prefer researching and creating content over massive backlinking campaigns.

I agree with this, the more research you do on the keywords, the easier your task is in getting the website ranked. you have to make sure that the keywords are low competition buyer oriented keywords though.

Stop the spamming and go for quality. Unfortunately, good SEO might cause a little bit more than before except if you already have the tools on ground. Even when you are doing it yourself, it's necessary you have monthly budget..

These days, no one should be relying on Google organic search as their primary source of traffic (unless it's through Adwords).

Link building is still important, though, because links refer people to your site. Focus on link building for your site that will get real referral traffic from a variety of sources.

And you know what? If you do that, you WILL rank. I guarantee it. Because links that give you niche referral traffic are pure gold when it comes to the algo. Nofollow. Dofollow. It doesn't matter. If the links bring the right people to your site, they're worth building.

High quality guest posts are a good way to go right now.

If you create an infographic with relevant information related to your niche, others will post it on their sites and distribute it for you. Guest posting is another effective strategy.

Backlinks are still part of SEO techniques, but you need to create more quality links pointing to your website. You can emphasis on contextual links through guest blogging and other techniques. Try to get advantage of social media websites to boost traffic and try to get likes, shares, and re-tweets so that you can get some social media influence in organic ranking.

you definitely still have to do backlinks, but I doubt I will ever use network or distributed spun content linking to my main sites, though I still test it out for smaller sites that I want tomake quick $$ on.

Here's an experiment that I am currently running - I have one new site, which is five months old and has so far 300 articles of 500+ words each and zero backlinks. All articles are unique and really well-written, the site is well optimized, loads quickly ... can you guess how much SE traffic the site gets? Zero as in none, not a single hit, nada.... this should answer your question.

Think about any of the websites you visit and one thing they have in common is they all have backlinks.

Even if you build a quality content website and don't actively look for backlinks you should get other people naturally linking to your site so it's hard to avoid any site having backlinks.

Bottom line, you need backlinks.

But I do agree with an earlier post don't rely on Google now for all your traffic.

Yes, it is still needed, there are some changes you have to do, that are:

multiple anchor texts for one url
slow link building
manual link building
natural link building

Its pretty clear, should i say crystal clear!
Backlinks are still definitely needed, and good quality content alone will never be enough.
So from now on i'll also try to do :
- social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon .... any other idea?)
- guest posting (i'm already following some people in my niche and after creating a few new articles i'll try to get in touch with them and see about some guest posting, ...)

Still Back links are important factor in SEO strategies. Though the updates from google changes a lot in the SERP , still back links are important. Its the backbone of a site in SEO technique. Generate backlinks from the quality websites and resources is the main aspects while considering the back links of a site

You should build backlinks and add UNIQUE content both in the same time. Your website won't have a great SEO strategy for example if you don't have quality backlinks AND your content is unique!

The current trend that I am noticing is well-written, unique (not in a non-duplicate sense, but content that is fresh and the same reworked info that is already out there) and a backlink portfolio that is diverse, uses a lot of different anchors, and comes from mostly relevant sites. I would also dumb down your onsite SEO. What worked 6-12 months ago is now known as overoptimization.
