301 Redirecting > Same or new content?

Ok so I have this free 3 page blog that is ranking quite nice and now I want to transfer these visitor & rankings to my new .com blog. I will do this by 301 redirecting the old blog to the new website.

But my question is: Is it better to write all new content for the new site for Google or better to use the old content that was already ranking?

    Do the redirect to the pages with same content, then add some new content.

      That's complete nonsense.

      Thousands and thousands of sites use 301 redirects everyday to point visitors and search engines to their new site.

      While there maybe a temporary drop in rankings, in most cases you'll retain your ranking.

I'm not implying that it absolutely will happen to him but I'm advising him to be on the safe side. Google's algorithm is not perfect. Also I did not tell him not to transfer the information over to his no website I'm simply advised him to do it with caution.

      Google does not ban websites for just doing a redirect.

      The drop in rankings UMS described is due to Google recrawling the old site, finding, and indexing all the 301's and there is a little bit of linkjuice lost when you do a 301.

      Usually the drop is only a few spots, if any at all. A drop in rankings though is not a ban from Google.

      The only reason they would have ended up with a banned account is if they were doing something that wasn't legitimate.

      I've moved many sites (including many clients) to new domains via 301 redirects and it works just fine so long as you don't try any blackhat techniques.

          When you do a 301, it is normal to see the site disappear from the rankings for a bit. The old site no longer exists. The ranking does not just instantly transfer to the new site. That's not how it works.

          I've seen it take over a week before the new site started showing up in the SERPs.

      Now THAT is complete nonsense.

      Many ideas tossed around about 301's, but that is complete nonsense.

      I myself do not do 301's. I never get rid of indexed content. Nice
      place for 100% "forever" backlinks.

      Anyway, there are reasons for doing it. I don't agree 100% with
      UMS, but he points out some good stuff. Hinting that a 301
      really should be a 1-1 swap. Your visitor should be taken to the
      same, close to, or even as UMS said, improved page, same
      topic. Debating a topic is different than just nonsense.

      People have started using 301's for dumb things that it was never
      intended for.

      A little knowledge can be a bad thing.

      Yeah, what account got banned? Make's no sense. Do you mean
      adsense?

      Can't think of a single reason an adsense account would get
      banned for a 301, unless it got redirected to a page that violated
      terms. But that's not a 301 problem, that's a content violation.

      Why would no ads or banners cloak an MFA site? That statement makes no
      sense, but gives a clue as to your thinking. You are obviously of a mindset
      to shmooze google. Therein lies the problem. Not a 301.

    You can write all your content to the new site, but the rank will not be achieved in the search within a short time. So, what's then? I think first you should redirect your visitor for the first time and try the website ready within this time. It will work better I think.

    Yes, 301 work but make sure that you DON'T move content. Some people will tell you that you can use old site content on your new site, but don't do it.

    If you want to achieve the best results with 301 redirect, use completely fresh content on the new site and you will be fine. That is from my personal experience.

    Okay, there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding my posts under this thread, and I understand the reasons why. However, people who have recently criticized my posts are misinterpreting my statements and it appears to me that they have not thoroughly followed the discussions that I was having with UMS and MikeFriedman. Anyway, it's pointless to continue these conversations under this thread so I have deleted all of my posts. I will clarify the point that I was trying to get across via pm's to everyone who has participated in this discussion.

    As Matt Cutts described 301 redirect as useful in SEO.. always use same content first.. and then add new content with great care... do not change images at all... only change 1 image per week this will help to no decreasing your rankings...
