Proportion of links for homepage vs. sub-pages

Hi,

New member to the Warrior Forum, hoping to learn a lot and contribute from my mistakes as well.

Question, is there a rough guideline on what proportion of link building activities should target the homepage versus sub-pages of a website?

50/50? 25/75? Even more extreme splits?

Thanks,

Ed

I don't think anybody could give you any specific number. Here is what I do; I usually build more links to my inner pagers. Why? Because when normally people link to a site they link to an inner page where a specific article resides. So If you want to make your link profile look natural, I'd think that would be the way to go.

Thanks, that's sort of the logic I'm using. Plus with inner pages you can be much more specific with targeted keywords, whereas the homepage can be tough to figure out what keywords to go after if you have broad offerings or are in a competitive niche.

You are welcome. And yes, that is exactly why it would look more natural to build links with related terms as anchor texts to those inner pages.

  • For some reason I have in the back of my head a 60% number.

I might have this confused with 'backlink spamming' number - but it might be applicable here as well.

(Google says that if more than 60% of your backlinks are the same anchor text to your website [and per page], you're backlink spamming)

It might translate here as well -- but I DO have to admit I'm speculating here, but it's an educated guess.
