When a site links to you via an image link, does the URL pointing to the page on your site have to be relevant to the picture or the website? Say for example a website about gaining weight has an image link pointing to your site on a page on how to get a six pack. Would this be fine?

That example is relevant (health niche).

It is definitely fine. Weight gaining and Six packs do have common things in them. The image is definitely a relevant one.

By including image links, you are building more natural links, it would pass weight for sure..

Google isn't looking at the picture and determining the niche it belongs to, if that was part of your question. You could put any photo you want and it wouldn't make a difference to Google (it would to site visitors of course).

And while it's nice to have links that are relevant, it's not absolutely necessary. The thinking is that relevant links are more valuable. But that doesn't mean that a link that isn't relevant to your site isn't valuable as well, just perhaps a little less than the relevant link.

      I disagree.

      Google is smart about images.

      Example:
      • Search this image URL on Google Images search by image feature (paste image URL)

Google knows this an image of a solar car, the keyword solar isn't in the image URL.
