Backlinking/pinging after post has been published

Does providing back links for posts created lets say a few months earlier still provide a benefit?

Is it better to back link when the post is fresh, or to backink a few weeks/months down the line?

    When you create a post, you can start doing link building for that from that time but do it slowly with quality.

    Thanks for the replies, guys, so backlinks need to be constant and ONLY do sits with a higher page rank than you, or can back linking to sites lower in rank than you have a opposite affect for that keyword/post?
