Hi guys and gals. Here is the problem. I had 4 600 unique visitors last month, more than 8, 600 total visits.19,229 pages; 126.000 hits - according to Awstats, Webalizer on server, and Jetpack stats on my WP web page. Some Facebook likes, some clicks through affiliate links, but nobody downloaded my free e-book yet.
I've optimized my site for high volume, low competition keywords. And it really works wanders, traffic related. Should I target more specific keywords? What am I doing wrong? (I've launched my page a month ago)
(I have a lot's of tech experience, but it's the first time I'm doing any SEO work)

How many links are on the same page as the download link? If you give traffic too many options they'll usually pick the links you don't want them to click.

Do you have a call to action (ex: Click here to download your Free ebook)?

Absolutely, the first few lines are very clear about free download. With the picture and big red letters that are followed by download button. When you scroll the page then there are affiliate widgets. I modified Shell Lite WP theme that has landing page split in two parts. Quite convenient to put main offer clearly on the top of the page.

Does the page sound like a "sales pitch"?
People nowadays are so use to picking out the "pitch" in marketing.
It has to sound more genuine, and natural. Instead of "hurry now before it's to late", sales pitch.

Makes sense, it's only a month old and I am still test driving the site. I'm using Ganxy for book download that, imho, looks quite reliable. (They have widget type promo/download/subscribe all in one - well designed, clean sales campaigns)
People started to follow me on twitter and like FB page (50 pips so far) It'll take some time to engage the audience I suppose - it's a hard work :p

I'm working hard on not to sound like a 'sales pitch' because I hate it myself. By offering a free download I intended to make it more like a teaser campaign. I'm creating full content authority site, with related articles, and related affiliate content. So I hope it gives a feel of no rush.

I have a few download sites, for my download links I use plain text (ex: Download) & a single image directly above the anchor-text link, sometimes a short description below the download link.

I've found that by being demanding with the call to action works better than a long drawn out sales pitch/description. Example for an email subscription box in the sidebar use Subscribe Now!, not something like Subscribe to my great email list for the best offers in the world, blah, blah, blah...

I keep all my download pages very simple & plain, traffic doesn't handle distractions very well. Give traffic too many options or force them to think & it's like they wander off into the unknown, lol.

Seems, you're right. I'll definitely rearrange on-page items. Something is bothering me about it, but couldn't figure what. . There is one mirror site I hadn't finished yet, that is much cleaner and simpler, and I'm personally more inclined to keep it that way. (But I haven't decided yet which site is better). I'll stick to your advice to see if there are any improvements.
      Thanx

Try embedding the link to the download in a sentence about the topic. In other words push less, rather than more.

The thing these days is most people have seen it all before [for proof click here], and are very suspicious of FREE anything.

That's not the case for my own sites (not IM niche), then again the whole point of my entire site/s is free niche downloads (legal downloads that I create).

I started out giving people on a niche forum free content, basically earned their trust. I was posting free content directly on the largest niche forum, people liked what I was posting & the post started getting unorganized by forum comments between my post, that's when I created a site/blog & started hosting the files on my own site, slowly moved the traffic to my site.

The cool part is, the niche forum consistently draws in a lot of people that's new to the niche & a lot of that traffic is drawn to my site/s because of the trust I built on the niche forum.

IMO, trust is the most important thing when it comes to traffic. Example, If someone says Paypal, the majority of people on the net would instantly associate that word (Paypal) with trust, they trust them enough to use them for transferring money. If I said Joe's Online Money Transfer, nobody would trust that, nobody has ever heard of it, no friends/family have ever recommended it, it's not trustworthy.

Free defiantly still brings in the traffic, & that same free traffic will still buy products, I've proven that to myself on my own sites.

I got the idea of what to do. I'll completely remove pushy elements from my intro. However I disagree about 'free' been suspicious. I'm myself kind of a 'free stuff' junkie :p

Give it a test and see what happens. I'd love to do a split test where people get a choice, buy a product for $1 or get it for free in exchange for a name and email address.

I absolutely agree with you that people are weary of free stuff. However they can also be very cheap. It depends on the niche and target market as to what works better for it.
