Hi Guys,
I must say that I am feeling depressed right now and let me tell you the reason why. I have been using a very famous SEO tool that costs around $100 a month to do keyword research and analyze competition for my niche. It turned out that the data presented by that tool is outdated and of no good to me. I literally feel like crying as I am writing this post because 1 month of my hard work has gone to waste and I am clueless about how to do proper keyword research.

I have a request to make to all the senior members here. If anyone of you can help me out in understanding the factors that make a keyword easy to rank for?

I want to know if pages like youtube and Yahoo.answers appear in the top 10 results of google, are such keywords too difficult to rank for?

Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Hey don't get worked up, everyone tries a lot of different things before they find their way. Tools can be helpful but, most of the time, ironically you must first learn to do what the tool does yourself (manually) before you can get any benefit from using it. Best keyword tool out there... your brain, followed closely by Google Keyword Tool (both free!)

You have to look at a couple things when choosing keywords:

    1) How many people are searching for it? (search volume)
    2) What's the competition like? (Don't trust Google on this one, scope it out yourself before you commit)
    3) CAN I MAKE MONEY OFF THIS KEYWORD AND WHAT IS THE MOST PROFITABLE WAY TO DO SO? Those questions should raise more questons but not sure you are there yet

As for your other question... about YouTube videos and Yahoo Answers: depends. Google decides which queries could possibly be answered with a video and includes video results in the results for those queries. Some queries really are best answered by a video, think about "how to" queries for example. For other queries a video wouldn't be a good fit. My favorite example from one of the best SEOs on this board was a locksmith that was baffled that his videos weren't ranking. The expert told him "if I'm locked out of my car and looking for a locksmith I'm not going to watch a video" Makes sense right?

Now Yahoo answers is trickier, on one hand if a question has been asked a thousand times on Yahoo Answers Google might deem that Yahoo Answers is an authority on the subject BUT very few Yahoo Answer threads will be pumped up with backlinks so that would be your way in. It's much more likely that a Youtube video has a ton of backlinks than a Yahoo Answers thread.

Anyways, don't despair, there are tons of awesome people here that can answer your questions along the way. HTH

If you want to do the keyword research the best way is to do it using competitor analysis or else choose Google adwords tool.

Keyword research tools, for the most part, are outdated, subjective and many times worthless. That goes for the paid ones and Google's free one, as well. The keywords you really care about are the ones you have noticed over time that have converted over and over again. You can only reveal these keywords through your own site's analytics over a spread of time, considering that your site is set up properly to track conversions back to a keyword query. Those keywords are true converting ones and should be guarded with your life.

In short, it's a big trial and error game until you've found the right keywords through proof: numbers and dollar signs. Drop the $100/mo service and put that money toward something useful.
