Google links finding question, please help

I tried a links:MySite.com search in Google search, and got 138,000 supposed pages found.
Did I use the wrong search criteria? Most of the pages that came up may have had the words of my domain in them, but no links to my site were found in most I checked.
What is the correct format of this search, please? Why am I getting such erroneous results?
