Question on Anchor Text links - Can Someone answer this?

I am using article marketing/blog posting to get backlinks to my sites. I have noticed something that I have a question about that effects (GREATLY!) how I would go about generating my links and the anchor text associated with them.

The question I have though involves the anchor text on my links. I usually try to put the max number (3) links in each article. I have noticed (in the small number of backlinks I have been able to track down so far), however, that it looks like only the first link in the article is found as a backlink. Why would this be?

The anchor text is different in each case, but I had the same URL (my home page) linked in each one. Do the search engines ignore additional links on the same page if they refer to the same URL? Knowing that all links should not be to just the home page anyway, I have gone back and modified the links in my article to point to different pages on my site. Will the search engines pick up these additional links now?

From my study of the Stompernet seo course, I think that you are right - if you link to the same URL twice, only the first anchor text will count. So you want to link to two different URL to make the best use of the links you have.

The same thing applies to your own web page - if you have two links to a page, make sure the first link has the anchor text you want. It's the first link in the html source, not as you see it on the page.

First from where? Top or bottom of the page source?

Thanks for the answer. As fate would have it, I am currently going through the StomperNet 2 training - getting ready to start Module 3 (Keywords) today. So maybe this information will come out a little later in the training (I don't remember seeing anything yet).

For anyone interested...it's a GREAT course!

I'm not totally in agreement with the advice you're getting here. The reason I think it still matters to have multiple links with different anchor text pointing to the same page is what it tells Google's system about your page. I do agree that you probably only get SERPs help from the one link and anchor text the bot picks up first, but I would be surprised if the other link(s) are being completely ignored. More likely is that they are registered and it helps Google understand the overall theme of your page better.

So if I had two links in an EZA article, both pointing to my homepage, and I used "dog training" as anchor text for one of them and "how to train poodles" as the other's anchor text, this would help Google understand that my site is generally about dog training, but more specifically about training poodles. Make sense?

Yes, that makes complete sense. What happens if the different anchor text points to DIFFERENT pages on my web site? Will the search engines count all of them as individual links back to my site?
