On google when I do site: www (and put in my site) I get 19 links indexed. But when I go to my webmaster tools I get that 31 links are indexed.
Which one is accurate?

The reason I am asking is I optimized and inner page for a search term which is one without competition but the home page is still ranking for that term (and the home page is not optimized for it). This has been for a few months. I need google to recognize my inner page. The inner page is not listed in teh site:www search - does that mean that it has not been indexed? Or does site: ___ not list all the indexed pages?

Thanks.

Your audience will use the search-engine (Google) to find your website and/or pages and not your Google webmaster account.

The difference can be explained with for example time. Google tries to move heaven and earth to get everything indexed and all their databases synced. But that doesn't mean that everything happens on the fly.

Just be patient, seems you sound sure you did your job now let Google do theirs

Do you have any clue what you are even talking about or what the OP was asking?

Webmaster Tools is more accurate. Google never shows anywhere near all of a website's links in the search bar.

That being said... the site: command really isn't going to give you a list of backlinks either.

His post is as you mentioned incorrect. He is using the site: query and his concern is about a subpage not being indexed. That makes me believe he talks about pages instead of (back)links.

Even if you are right then your post does not answer his main concern (page not being indexed). It seems more important to you to try a cheap shot at me.

If you actually stood in front of a mirror and said that....

Google will never, ever, ever show all backlinks that count.
It would be one of the biggest disclosures in the history of
the internet and put their alogorithm at risk. Aint gonna
      happen.

Besides, google indexes a lot of shtuff that they may not
count as a backlink that, well, counts.

And where do I say anything about Google and showing any backlinks?

I only suggested that his concern lays in what the search-engine shows (indexed pages wise). As that is the product what his visitor will use.

Speaking about that, what did you actually suggest to help OP with his main concern (not being completely being indexed)? You rather try and fail on doing random cheap shots? Hmm.

I've noticed discrepancies between site:www.example.com and site:example.com. Try both and see if there is a difference. Google might be displaying your URLs differently in its index.

The site: operator has also been acting funny this month so it could just be something Google is doing.

In the end, I did just as moretravel said and site:www.example.com and site:example.com did give different results. The link I was looking for is in site:example.com for some reason and not in site:Example Domain (even though all the sites are showing with the www url).

      Thanks everyone for your responses.
