Question-- to subdomain or not to subdomain

Hi folks.
So I just launched this site, and I'm trying to grab some juicy keywords.
the site is for my focus group books, www.getfocusgroups.com.

I used to do focus groups in New York for extra money, and wrote it all down into a product and website. took years to bring it to fruition. I got really good at it, did hundreds of groups over time, and literally got paid well, and fed well. I wrote it all down. my first real web property.

I have one competitor, really, and I even corresponded with him years ago. He's just a guy who had the same idea I did but not books, and he's not actively building an opt in. Not a web marketer. He has no deliverable, but he has the benefit of 6 years.

Now, my competitor is not a good SEO guy, and I can out flank him with some of his choice keywords over time. Then I can more rapidly rank near him for the same traffic.

QUESTION.
say he ranks for "focus groups in la" as a keyword. good traffic. I'm after that traffic to get on my opt in list and hopefully buy my ebook. Lots of focus groups in la, lots of traffic.

www.focusgroupsinla.com is available. I can buy it right now and build a small site which can be shared with my overall site.

Is it better for me to buy the url, or just have it as a category, or is it better to make it a subdomain.

My old way of thinking is to build a separate website. I have the content, and a giveaway, and it actually helps me segment my list if I get opt ins there.

I don't know what to do here. ONE big site with subdomains. or One big site with categories and keywords.
or
A whole different site. Just for Los Angeles. The traffic is there, and I can get the dot.com.
I can do the same for NYC, just to let you know. I already own the keyword domain that is best for paid focus groups nyc.

Please chime in.
Mark

    It's moot.
Subdomains are looked upon as separate websites anyway.
They would just save you time and expense.

I'm chuckling a little as I see long domains as being hard
    to "focus" on.
