My experiment with duplicate content and getting INDEXED

Ok it's been several months since I created the site. It is a reseller site that has already been indexed by at least google, probably all the major search engines.

Since my original intention was to simple advertise this site on adwords I used my tried an proven method for getting a 7/10 "OK" quality score: I used a bunch of Ezine Articles for sub pages and just had the site map link in small text at the bottom of the main page. I also used a privacy and contact page. In other words not one word on the site was original. Everything was copy and paste.

By the way, this has worked consistently for getting 7/10 OK QS on adwords for several sites. Just add about 5 pages of ezine articles and make sure you bid on relevant keywords and you are in.

But what surprised me was that months later, and not just recently, my site is now on page one, second listing down for a very competitive keyword. This is getting me some very nice targeted traffic and making me sales, all for duplicate content on my site.

Not Google unfortunately, but Yahoo.

I am now wondering, why bother with original content ever if this is how easy it is? I can just churn out these sites over and over for different niches...

Sometimes when you find a system you just have to go with it. May be able to do a free report for an optin or a WSO.

I mix about 30% dup content on my site and most of the time it is my own content that is being cloned and form what you mention it works well. I have had no problem with google though unless it is all dupe.

Duplicate content penalty is overrated. I have sites with duplicate articles like yours, but also rank well. It's the overall site theme, backlinks and pagerank that matters.

Not overrated - it doesn't exist when talking about articles. It refers to using the same content on multiple pages on the same site.

I use a combination of unique content, articles I've submitted, articles by others (with proper links, etc), and some PLR - to build a new niche site. Works fine.

With Yahoo I think it has a lot more to do with laser targeting a certain group of keywords. Put it in your domain, title, description, and in all your pages. Just make your whole site focused on the keyword group, even to the point that it gets ridiculous. I have some backlinks but not many and the sites are PR 0. I had one that was PR 3 (now 2) but it did not do that well.

I have three sites now (different niches) on yahoo's first page that are getting, not a ton of hits, but good targeted traffic that converts. And one of them is a .tv. That was the only .tv I had bought because I figured the search engines snubbed them, but not yahoo apparently.

edit: Just checked and I also have a PR 2 (differnet from the one mentioned above) site now on yahoo's first page. But that one is one google's first page off and on because there is fierce competition for that one (get laid)...

Take it from someone who tested this with not one site but 150 sites. Duplicate content will get you some traffic, but not anywhere's near what original content will. But here's the grey zone, if you can mix up duplicate content to create something semi-original and mix in some original content, you'll be ranked and ranked quickly. This does work! I've been testing this idea on about 30 sites right now to just ensure against flukes.

Bottom line, if you post only PLR or the such, then you will reap the rewards - zip.

If you take a moment to make even PLR a bit orginal with tools like wordflood, then you'll start making money.

Shhhhhssss ... your letting too many secrets out. Ha ha

Yes it took me about 20 sites and various social networks to figure this out.

You are 100% correct. My SE traffic represents the same percentages one would expect from various engines.

Good to hear that it's the same elsewhere, lol. That's one thing I keep telling new and even seasoned IMer's when they ask me if it would work or not. I tell them to try, even if I know it may suck.

I don't do this to keep others in confusion, but only by finding what doesn't work, will you discover what does work. I remember a saying by Robert Kyosaki (sorry, I did bugger his name), from Rich Dad, Poor Dad, "if you want to succeed, you need to fail faster". What he meant was you need to fail much more, much faster to find the road to success.

Taking that to heart, I'm well into the 300's for sites. And boy have I made a boat load of mistakes. But I've learnt a ton too. It's great when you really start getting traffic and making money too!

Also to answer seosharing's question, if I understand correctly, do you wish to find out if content is duplicate or not. Two ways mate. First, if you get information from someone else, do a quick re-write. There are other tricks, so to speak, which I will be sharing on an WSO coming out in about a month that really saves time, but make sure it's original by doing it yourself.

Second, you can plug an article against Copyscape - Search for Website Plagiarism and Duplicate Content Online. If it comes up as more then about 40% the same as another article, you've got possible problems.

        Hope that helps.

I agree Frank that most sites should contain original content, and most of mine do. I was being a bit facetious when I said I would just crank out all duplicate content sites. The sites I was referring to, I did not intend to EVER get ranked.

In fact, this thread could easily be about "how to easily make an adwords site in 10 minutes" that gets an OK QS (good enough most of the time).
