I have a website with about 500 indexed pages and around 1500 visitors per month. A while back I got tempted to fix the internal linking structure of the website in a Wikipedia-like style. This is what I did:
- I had 5-10 blog posts for each keyword and none of them had an internal link (connection) to the others. I chose the strongest page with the best rankings as main page for that keyword and linked relevant articles altogether in the following manner:
1- Main page: I internal linked it to the other relevant pages with the same keyword, anchored with title of those articles, all at the end of the main article as: extra resources to read.
2- I internal linked all of those relevant articles to the main article, as a contextual link, anchored with the keyword or variations of that keyword.
Simply put: I linked all relevant blog posts two-ways, one-way anchor as titles of the helping articles and one way with exact-match and relevant anchors to the main article.
- I repeated the same thing for most of the pages in the website.
- I expected to have a boost in traffic doing this and alternatively my traffic fell to 500 visitors per month.
- I thought it may be a Google dance of some sort and I continued what I was doing before that, but after about two months, the rankings and traffic have not gone back to where they were. Still at 500/m traffic.
- There was no message of penalty in Google Webmaster Tools.
