ZERO LINK BUILDING : Is it possible to rank in Google with only Quality content?

In plain English - NO!!!

"Create great content and links will come" - this is the most ridiculous line ever used in SEO. You have to build links to be found in google.

Then why not check out this case study. it is proof that it works. Unless she is lying but i doubt she is.

Im pretty certain she is good at writing content though. Some people have a knack for it.

Lisa is famous, she has her audience. Her sites are mostly aimed for helping etc.

However, when you are unknown guy with a plumber-man company then how the hell should you get links without building them?

That's the main difference.

Uhmm sure you can rank a website by just creating great content and nothing more..... IF YOU HAVE 14422 TWITTER FOLLOWERS!!!! But for OP(i doubt he's got 14422 followers), its just not possible.

This lady has built an online reputation, people know her and when she writes a mind blowing content, and i repeat "MIND BLOWING CONTENT", people in her fan base share it and maybe create links for her. OP on the other hand has no followers(this is a guess), nobody to share his content and in short nobody to build links for him. he's got no other option but to build links.

Yes, and I have seen Alex Cass from Source Wave show he can get top rankings for obscure keywords with only a title and a graphic. but so what, the sites are useless other than for showing it can be done.

Unless you do some back linking, you will be hard pressed to get any page with a decent search volume to find itself on the first page of any SERP.

Possible? Yes. On the other hand, you might create all that great content and it's also possible that you WON'T rank with JUST the content.

For high and medium competitive keywords, its simply Not Possible. For less competitive keywords, yes, you can, but it will take time.

I don't think it is possible unless you are targeting a long tail keyword with very low competition. Those people who want to do case studies about it, should use high competitive keywords so that we can believe it is possible.

I was implying that link building is much wider than Newbies like the OP think it is. You can build links without placing them yourselves or using a link service.

The thread for that reason continues to be worthless. If you do nothing to promote your content then its an obvious NO since not enough people will even know it exists. It your promote content that can be a part of link building.

Yes you can!! Figuring people can actually find your site to be able to build links to it.. and in order for that to happen, you need to build links to it yourself.. so people can find it, to build links to it. Either that or set up an Adwords campaign, which google would rather see you do.. but that's another subject

Yes you can. While doing keyword research I've stumbled with several sites ranking in the top 10 without a single link. Of course this is the case for keywords with low competition.

This is basically an impossible question to answer. Whether or not you will be able to rank in Google with zero link building depends on a whole range of different factors:

Exact match domain usage
Aged or authority domain usage
Pre-launching your site to build buzz
Pre-existing social media presence
Whether your content naturally attracts links or not
On-page SEO usage

Wow Yukon is that you in your profile pic?

Aside from that, I actually have one test site that I've been building. Just content, no manually created in-bound links, to see how well it does over time.

So far each day it's received .5 - .75 visitors for each article published, so for the 50ish articles on the site it gets between 25 - 35 visits a day with no off-page seo done.

Some of the articles have done a lot better than others and have been shared on other sites, so that is a backlink back to the site, just not something i created manually.

So, like a few others have stated, you can rank for in Google for low competition keywords without creating your own links. And though the keywords are low competition they are actually terms people search for since all the visits are big G traffic.

Yes, it depends on competition.

But you can't get desired ranking, you may get first page ranking but not first position.

So you have to do link building to get desired position in Google.

Yeah phrase with 20k searches per month and £20 cpc is not competitive... he has a 200 page site, with a pa/da less than 40. Very few links at all.

It is yes and no. Creating great content alone is not enough, people will also have to find your content, share it, aka create social signals and link to it naturally, then you will be found by Google. Content, no matter great it is, without promoting, will never rank, except if the keywords have almost no competition.

Will depend on niche, who is gonna measure the quality of content ? It will be different from person to person. A article that i think is QUALITY may be poor in someone's view.

However, if the competition is poor then creating a good content should easily rank and once it starts to get natural shares it will definitely stick to TOP

We will not get any rank but if your contents have the keywords that people searches, then you will get position on Google for that keywords..We have a website, www.assamhosting.com..we have just created it without any efforts, but we get searches for it daily and even it is on 1st page for some keywords..but now we have created some back links for future help as OFF PAGE SEO is as important as ON PAGE SEO..I suggest you to do OFF PAGE SEO in the best way if you want long term results..

It is possible to rank without any link building but not in every case. This happens once when my freshly written article (after 2 hrs of publication) was in top 5 but lasts for few days before falling to 3 pages behind.

Yes its possible if your site is properly structured for SEO ... as in rich content with proper keyword PHRASES, lots and lots of internal linking , occasional update on content etc

If your site is setup that way then its always good to do a couple of anchor text backlinks a month

There is a blogger who did an experiment with no link building.

Also, there are plenty of 'normal' non-IM people who make great content that gets found and explodes in popularity. It usually happens when they are doing something very unique or create super link bait, sometimes not necessarily while trying to do so (ie someone posts a blog post about something weird and it gets picked up and shared everywhere).

It is possible, but not the easiest or most efficient path to take I think.

We have not done any specific link building campaigns for our website, just signature links like the ones below, and some top end directory submissions. It has been fine for us so far.
