Does a domain's age affect its ranking?

Yesterday, Alexzeto posted an interesting question if the domain's age has a high contributing factor to getting it ranked faster than a younger domain. So, I thought of like "re-posting" that here so we can have a fresh exchange of insights.

In 2009, Matt Cutts answered this question. Is his answer still applicable in 2013? What do you think?

I'll be writing a blog that will be based on the discussion that we will have in this post.

Don't you just love how Matt Cutts says a lot without exactly saying anything. Never gives any direct answers

I am thinking that, perhaps, during the taping of this video, he didn't want to give a spot-on answer to the question because he was considering the changes that they wanted to implement months or years from that precise moment.

  • I think it is one of thousands of factors that goes into their SERPs. It is not, however, the most important, or even close.

No, the fact that the old domain will most likely have old backlinks already indexed in mass is what's going on.

You could have a 15 year old domain with zero backlinks, you won't rank for any competitive keywords.

Do you concur Doctor? I Concur...Let's rewrite it in a more humorous fashion.

Just like sexual performance, with age comes expectation of experience. But there are still plenty of 40 year old virgins out there.
