It works well if you have a service that you are offering. You can link to other companies that are offering services that your prospects might be interested in. Of course, you should ask for a link back from the businesses you are promoting

More and more I'm thinking that "G" has ruined the internet in so many ways. It use to be sites would exchange links as a simple way to actually get linked into the web. Search engines were just part of the equation. Now if you look at some of these 3d maps of the net the big players dominate as they've tried to get rid of all interlinking between smaller sights. They don't want anyone "surfing the web". Surfing the web now means searching "g" then searching it again and again. I don't even really surf the web anymore. You use to actually be able to explore the web by surfing links. Seems like that's dead. Well then again there's stumbleupon

There's nothing wrong with doing what you are suggesting. If something is beneficial to your visitors, and you are simply linking to a few services you recommend, that shouldn't get you in trouble with Google. It's not necessarily going to help from an SEO perspective. But if it helps your website visitors then go for it.

If it's churn & burn type of site - why not. If it's real money site - hell no

I wouldn't call it a link exchange page, I would call it something like Partners & Suppliers, or local businesses.

I would start by reaching out to businesses in your local area and ask them to exchange links with you. So long as you don't overdo it, I can't see it being a problem. I would also have the anchor text back to your site being the business name rather than your target keywords

      Exactly. And very good points.

The way I read into your post, you're not doing a link exchange. And that term throws people off. You're dedicating a page on your site to resources that could help your existing customers. Nothing wrong with that. Is it beneficial? Who knows and that's your call. But it shouldn't hurt you.

And hurt you at the same time? That's insane.

When is a link exchange not a link exchange?

Man the whole idea is nauseating. Do you people actually spend your
time making money, or thinking up this nonsense?

Some of you probably cannot fit your cellphone in your pocket...

Having a page like that brings up awful memories of the 1990's.

    -The blink tag.

-Lake affect javascript on images that choked browsers.

-Giving out some "award" to other pages.

    -Webrings.

    -scrolling text.

-angelfire, tripod, geocities, bravenet,... (gag gag gag)

    -guestbooks

-and...........our friends page. Link to us, we'll link to you! GAG GAG GAG!

Anyone care to add to the list of horrible 1990's net crapola?

Oh lawd, this brings up memories of websites I ran on Geocities and Angelfire. I'd like to add:

      - Visitor counters
      - Splash pages
      - Shockwave plugins
      - White/dayglo text on black backgrounds

We still get clients who ask for some of these things. Sigh.

Counters! LOL! Man I was guilty of most of that stuff! I loved those
        fancy counter scripts!

Yukon makes a good point. You and you alone are responsible for
your own success and failure. If you keep thinking about google,
you'll overthink yourself right into oblivion. I still vote on not
        having some link page.

Some of you guys might want to take some time off & look at what sites that don't care about SEO are doing. There's nothing wrong with pages like domain.com/links.html. Having multiple sites in the same niche allows to have one way links If your paranoid.

I get direct niche traffic from a few links.html pages/sites that I don't own, I asked for the links. I still rank pages on those domains all day long.

Seriously, use your head, don't let Google or anyone else stand between your site & same niche traffic outside the SERPs.

    As Google Webmaster Guidelines state:

"Excessive link exchanges ("Link to me and I'll link to you") or partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking".

From what we can say, that having such a page on your website, no matter how you try to disguise it, may potentially put your website at risk.
