Possible Influence of Copied Content and Site Errors on Website

My site rankings fluctuated hugely as you can see in the below screenshot and it lasted for almost a year.

I did the following things in an attempt to stabilize it:

- removed PRweb submitted press releases from my site to increase uniqueness
- fixed 404 errors
- disallowed wp-content / wp-include components to be indexed (block in robots.txt)
- prevented those /? variable url's to be created probably caused by sort/search functions.
- got finally rid of a penalized sub domain that got indexed and shows with the site: command.
- filed a disavow report to get rid of the most spammy links.

All of the site errors are fixed now and most unwanted pages are removed from the SERPS and since then the rankings seem to have stabilized, although perhaps still a bit early too tell.

Interesting. I have a pretty big site thats been doing that exact same thing. I know theres a lot of junk indexed for the domain but ive been too lazy to clean it up. Do you think the penalized subdomain had a lot to do with that?

No I don't think so but just wanted to give the complete picture, the sub domain didn't even exist anymore.

I noticed that Google finally got rid of a lot of pages that shouldn't been indexed and since then rankings for 4 keyword stopped bouncing around.

Could be that the disavow had to do with it but also less likely.

Most of the times when I see other sites bouncing like crazy the sites are either super thin / not relevant enough or tons of site issues.

The relevant part might have played a large role as I had a lot of press releases that don't have much to do with SEO.

Ill have to takr a look at that. 887 published posts and 1200 something indexed. Most of that appears to be image attachment pages. I may just add this one to WMT for a bit more control.

I am curious how you fix your wordpress 404 error? For example old index pages that no longer exist, let's say more than 1K are all gone. Any suggestion to properly fix this problem.

    thanks
