Hi guys,

I was just wondering how important back links are for SEO?

How much attention should I pay to building them as opposed actual page optimisation.

Thanks

Back links are essential for SEO. No links, no traffic.

Back links are even more important than on page optimisation, sites such as adobe
rank very high for the phrase click here but doesn't optimise for that keyword, they rank high because all those other sites link to it with the keyword click here as a hyperlink.

So back linking is very important, just remember to use the keyword you are optimising for as your actual link, this holds far more weight in the eys of the search engines

The basics of on-site optimization are important. They help to tell the search engines what you're about. But link building is far, far more important. What you rank for is determined (well sort of) by what's on the page. Where you rank is determined by your backlinks.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I have a important question though. Every single page of my website is optimised for a certain keyword.

Are you saying a should create a link with that keyword and then link it to the actual page with that keyword?

    Thanks

Not just link singular but links plural. The more links containing those keywords (including the links on your site) the better you will rank for them.

Then with a good internal linking structure those links will also have the effect of helping your homepage to rank even better for more generic terms.

Eg If you are in the weightloss niche. You might have subpages optimized for longtail phrases like "low carb diet and exercise plan", "High intensity impact training diet requirements" (both completely made up examples). By getting links from other sites using those phrases you help those individual pages rank well. Then they all link back to your homepage and helps you rank for terms like "weightloss" (well OK, you'd need thousands of pages for stuff like that but you get the point).

Ok I understand, for each keyword I actually want to optimise for, I want to to get a backlink with that keyword in it, which when clicked will link to the page on my website with the keyword that I am optimising for, which in turn links to my homepage.

    If that makes sense!

Backlinks are to your google search engine rank ... as air is to humans.

No links = no rank [ or page 105 ]

link development will most likely always remain one of the top things of importance. But keep in mind that you can squeeze more out of your links by doing all of the other things such as on site optimization etc.
