Google Planner Sucks as a KW research tool

First off I'm no expert at KW research but I have used the keyword tool for years and have keyword data for a particular niche that I have accumulated over the years.

I tried getting keywords for that niche from GP and it falls flat. Keywords collected from GKT one month before GP was implemented gave some great keyword ideas for traffic generation. One month later GP cannot produce any of those keyword ideas no matter how I try to filter or configure the search. The relevant keywords that I got a month before would just not show up.

I would then hand pick one of the keywords that I had from GKT and then use it in the planner and BOOM, GP gives me the traffic data for that keyword which it couldn't come up with without me manually putting it in.

For instance i would put house in GKT.... and it might suggest houses which has even more traffic than house. GP would not suggest houses as a good keyword idea but when i type it in manually it would show me that houses indeed has more traffic than house. I consider that a downgrade from GKT.

Anyone else having similar experiences?

    What I tend to do is dump in some broad seed keywords. I then copy the results and throw them into Scrapebox. I append A-Z to all (similar to what Ubersuggest does, but on a massive scale), let it run, and end up with 50,000+ keywords. Finally, I plug these back into the KW Planner to get search results.

    They've changed how they suggest new keywords.

    You have to remember that the Keyword Planner is designed 100% for Adwords users, not for SEO keyword research. It makes sense that they would want to show keywords that help Adwords advertisers make/spend more money.

    Like JSProjects say, those keywords you're not seeing anymore WILL show up if you enter enough keyword iterations into the tool.

    I do the same thing with Market Samurai JSP, but I probably should start using Scrapebox, because Samurai "only" gives me 800 keywords to work with.

    I still use the metrics to determine what keywords that I want to use for my sites:

    Local Search Volume: >1000

    CPC: >$1.00

    Competition: Low and Medium (for now, I have found that I can rank in the Google top 10 for some medium KWs)
