I have taken on a new client for website developmenet and they want to keep there exisiting url, and rightly so as it is in there current google places listing which is on page 1 for a competitive term.

The problem is the domain isn't owned by them but a previous development agency and they won't release it.

Can I circumnavigate this situation and update the existing google places listing? Can I have google re send the pin?

I don't think they have access so there google places listing

You can easily gain access to the existing google places listing. All you have to do is land on the Google places listing and on this section (see photo), click "manage listing".

Select one of two ways, either receive the phone call with the pin to activate, or wait 1-2 weeks for google to mail the pin to verify. You can then make changes using to it using your new gmail account that you signed in to when you clicked "manage listing"

I think he means that the website domain isn't owned by them.

You can change this URL easily on the listing, but you must understand that your map ranking is tied to the strength of the website. Starting with a new domain / website will hurt.

The best thing to do is to copy the website and put it on a new domain, then QUICKLY get to work updating EVERY citation you can. Once you're done that, change the URL in the Google listing. This does have to be quickly because if Google starts scraping data with two different URLs, it may cause confusion. Just make sure the sites match exactly.

Obviously, you don't want to alert the domain owners to what's being done.

Finally, since the age and link profile of the new domain won't be the same as the other site, you may see a drop in rankings, but if you work hard at building great quality citations and high quality links, then you should recover well.
