Hi Fellow warriors,

I'm in the final stages of my new product "My Twitter Blueprint" and getting ready to start building a network of sites linking to my money site.

I was wondering which one is more important

Content or Backlinks...

I'm a firm believer in building a link structure around the high PR web 2.0 site's like digg, squidoo and wordpress.

I've seen phenomenal traffic from these site's which makes me learn to the side of building links.

Let me know which one you think is more important.

Site content is important. Make sure the keywords you want to rank for are on the page several times, in the title, in h1/h2 tags, image alts, strong text, meta tags etc. Helps the search engines know what you're about.

But after that it's backlink building. And this stage is by far the most important part of it. Optimising a page is less than half an hours work. Building backlinks needs to be committed to for the long term.

You could improve this page a fair amount quite easily in my opinion (in SEO terms I mean).

        - You have a typo in your meta description "increse twitter followers"
        - You haven't got your keyword in an h1 and h2 tag
        - You haven't set your images' alt tags

Just sorting those bits out will help you a fair amount.

        Cheers,

        Andy

I hear a lot of folks using the phrase Content is King. And well they may be right... in the long run. Very long run?

But what I havent puzzled out is ... do you really have the amount of time to wait and work and write making $0 while your Royal Content gets indexed, and gets ranked? Or linked to by others ... Then in the next paragraph they will write that you need to write more content and that has links to your $$$ content [ aka creating links on PR article sites ]

So then ... is the content King or the backlinks to it really King? Both strategies will get you results.

But here's an example of whats made me a believer in links. For one of my keyword phrases ... Im battling a a guy who has over 200 EZA articles optimized mainly for this keyword phrase. I have 1 page .. barely SEO optimized for the term as I changed it AFTER I put the site together, cuz I learned how to do smarter keyword research - duooooh!. He has me this week by 3 notches. Ive been higher than he on multiple occasions. All I have is a about 250 backlinks in google at this time for this phrase.... and 3 total articles that kinda suck as they are my first and only articles to date. Im a 1 page site vs. 50 page site and 200+ articles. If content was the king - shouldnt he be wiping hte floor with my lame little site in the rankings?

I don't think that "content is King" only relates to ranking. This is a very superficial way to see it.
Content is the king means that if you have good content your customers will come back again and again to your site and will buy from you more if the information you give them is useful for them. Content doesn't have to be only on your website (and that's why it is not referring only to ranking), it can be in your follow up autoresponder or in an ebook that you write. Good content builds your reputation.
Links are great for ranking, but if your website have no useful content to offer people will not come back.

Ok, for a start your web address:

        Code:
        http://mytwitterblueprint.com/followme/index.php
see your folder "followme", should be "increase-twitter-followers"

and optimize the url without the index.php so it looks like this

        Code:
        http://mytwitterblueprint.com/increase-twitter-followers/
        Why?

First off, you now have the word "twitter" in your TLD, and you have your folder with the main keyword phrase in there, this increases overall url prominence of the phrase you want to rank for.

Secondly, having index.php in the url and using that as part of the back link, decreases the overall prominence.

Third, Now, your description is ok, but why not add the "FREE $197 increase twitter followers blueprint" in there, this is a call to action, and you're not using any.

And make good use of it too, 160 chars, you only have about 80. Be more creative.

Fourth, you have no H1 tag that says "Increase Your Twitter Followers", just below the links in the header.

Fifth, your subject, doesn't contain it either. You need some of your keywords at the top of the page.

Sixth, your image ALT text says "My Twitter Blue Print", why not make it say "Increase Your Twitter Followers, My Twitter Blue Print". Do that for all your images, but mix up the possible phrases that people could use.

Seventh, the blue link, why not add the title="increase twitter followers today" in there, this acts like an ALT text caption, but is used for links, b, i, u, h, etc tags.

Eighth, your footer is bleak, a footer is just as important as the top part of the page. Put in a series of P.S's

        ie.

P.S I can ensure you that my increase twitter followers blueprint is what you're looking for, don't delay and sign up free today.

P.P.S If my increase twitter followers blueprint doesn't help you, let me know and I'll personally assist you one-on-one to build your twitter followers list

        etc, etc,

then under that, you have your copyright section.

place "Increase Twitter Followers" as your anchor text link, and color the link white so it stands out. Blue against black looks iffy.

Tenth, add a call to action in your title too.

Hope this helps, by doing this, you've optimized your onpage by more than 100%

Personally, without delving into copywriting I'd have this headline:

    Congratulations!

You Now Have Free PRIVATE ACCESS To
    My $197 Value, Twitter Blueprint
    To Increase Twitter Followers
But just as Andy advised, it's a matter of getting a lot of backlinks with that anchor text now. Get to work!

Sales letter is the king and links are the army. If your sales letter doesn't convert, what's the point of driving traffic to it? But if we talk just about ranking, it's backlinks. There's just no contest there. Very few people can produce really great content that will gather backlinks by itself so much it will rank good. But lot's of good backlinks can rank lower quality content.

I suppose the answer to your question depends on your goal...I can't completely tell from original post if you are trying to obtain SERPs or traffic from other sources.

If you are looking for SERPs, I would say that backlinks are MOST important but that you also need SEO optimized content/code. (not necessarily quality content)

As far as content is concered, you could have convincing and high quality marketing copy (as people have alread mentioned) and/or SEO optimized content. Both would be good but you can get away with poor marketing content as long as it is SEO optimized for SERPs. If these sites are just "doorway pages" then make sure the path to your money site is very clear and obvious.

I think it really matters what you are trying to do with your site. Some would argue (reasonably) that having good content is actually bad on some adsense sites, since what you really want is someone to click on the ads to get away. However, if you are trying to pre-sell someone effectively, good content is very important. But regardless of the content - good or bad - you aren't going to go far if you don't have the backlinks to bring you decent organic traffic to your website. So I would say, ultimately, backlinks are more important than content.

Content especially if you pay attention to your keywords placement will get you longer term search engine rankings. Back links on the other hand work for the short term there is always a risk that one or two back links will be from sites that are blacklisted and that can result in significant drop in rank for your site.
My advise is if you are going for back links take more caution.
But don't forget poor keyword selection is equally a waste of effort.
