How do they index their post "categories" in Google??

I recently searched on Google for a keyword similar to what I am going after myself. I clicked on the number 2-3 result in Google and instead of being taken to an individual article, I was taken to a post category page - 3 x 4 columns of thumbnails/excerpts which I thought was really good because I now could choose any one the 12 articles on preview.
I attached a basic image to show the sort of page I was brought to.
How can one aim to index these category pages, I'm using wordpress.
